best eh? well i think salman rushdie is wonderful. his stories are complex, rewarding, beautifully plotted and his writing is delicate, expressive, rotund, creative and poetic according to the needs of the tale. the same can be said for jeanette winterson. alisdair gray is great writer too. will self is sarcastic, rewarding, satirical, far-too-clever-by-half and yet still eminantly readable. there are so many damn good writers out there that this list really is shite.
nick hornby on the other hand is getting worse by the book. how to be good was virtually unreadable pulp bullshit IMO.
you don't need to be a good artistic writer to be an entertaiing writer - look at pratchett for a start, or indeed rowling to most people. but IMO it helps.
[edit] that came across nasty and you were nice about it so I'm just going to say that while both those writers you menion are great neither of them are British, unfortuantly.
