Best Literary Characters

Keith Talent- London Fields. He's so vile, yet I always feel for him somehow. He's not just a bad guy, he has a whole character. Darts Keith, Darts.

Arturo Bandini - John Fante Bandini Quartet
Hank Chinaski - Bukowski (Factotum, Women etc...)
Jesus of New Testament Fame

I'm with you on that. But I can't ignore Pozzo or Lucky. Both equally important and brilliant characters.

Yep. Though I'd hate to play Lucky in a stage production. ;)

Innit. Yeah cheers.

Marian Halcombe, from 'The Woman in White', a strong, intelligent and very likeable heroine.

Aye - was just reminded of him by Ms T's post on the other thread

Oh God, I agree. That is the most incredible book and Alex is such a brilliant sad funny character.

What was Mrs T's post?

She was just posting that she was reading it on the what are you reading thread

Francis Cornish or Dunstan Ramsay. Robertson Davis was excellent at central characters, although some supporting ones were scribbled in rather.

And thumbs up for Keith Talent, the Groke and particularly Isserley. Michel Faber is probably the best living male writer of female heroines, even if they do turn out to be whores or aliens.

Oh right. I am evangelical about that book. I lent it to my friend a while ago and he 'couldn't get into it' which made me regard him in a whole new, less positive light.

There are certainly some books like that - friends tell they don't like them and you reevaluate your friendship with them
