Best Kinks song ...

Dirty Martini

gets what he cant want
... that isn't You Really Got Me or Waterloo Sunset :D

I'm going for Animal Farm, which is possibly the best song ever written, I Need You, and Autumn Almanac. Subject to change.

Dozens of great songs to choose from though. Ray Davies is the best British songwriter ever, and The Kinks close to the best band.

:)

Apart from all the obvious smashes, two of my favourite Kinks' songs are 'Big Sky' and 'Wonderboy'.

Perfect songs by a perfect group.

grumpy. Susannah's Still Alive is always a strong contender...

I was listening to that earlier -- bit of a bar-room bollocker.

You need Animal Farm -- ''This world is big and wild and half insane/Take me where real animals are playing" :D

Village Green Preservation Society

I saw that one coming :D

Great song, but it's more of an intro to the album -- I find it difficult to think of it as a separate song if that makes sense.

What it is to be predictable eh? :D

Picture Book of that album is a goodie too - is it on an ad or something at the moment? I seem to keep hearing it.

-Aww, I just dug this one out. Great choice. I've always loved the 'Village Green...' album.

It's a fantastic song, just perfect. Is there a singer with more character that R Davies in that song?

I should update to the VGPS expanded edition -- my copy's jumping all over the place.

i'd go for 'all day & all of the night' (which was 'you really got me' mark 2, but better).

Otherwise i'd go for 'dead end street' which is eerie without being sentimental, & 'celluloid heroes' which is both sentimental & eerie, but just about gets the balance right.

Dead End Street by a MILE!

although death of a clown is good (as is the actual death of A clown, hate them!)

Do you remember walter? is my absolute favourite from Village Green, and my favourite overall. I also like Some mother's son from Arthur wot is maudlin but heartfelt. And Holiday off Muswell Hillbillies is perfect.

Tricky though. But wot about something off something else...hmmm....

besides 'picture book' there's also the gem that goes - 'people take pictures of eachother, just to make sure they really existed'.
Can't remember the title, possibly 'Pictures'.
'Pictures of me when I was just 3, sat with my ma by the old oak tree...'

Apart from the obvious ones (Waterloo, You Really Got Me, and Dedicated Follower), I really like:

Shangri La - nice epic! :D
