Best island you've ever visited

An excellent day out - used to go for a day trip every Summer as a kid on the Manxman from Fleetwood to Douglas :)

And, it has faeries and big mechanical waterwheels and seals and wildlife. And, the TT races and beaches and tranquil little harbour towns and casinos and geological things and cats without tails...

And, it's only 2 inches by 1 inch big.

Fucking amazing!

--/ I forgot the history - old parliament and all that. And, it's own coins and currency. Loads really.

The Isle of Mull

Beautiful mountains, White sandy beaches.

Golden Eagles, Sea Eagles, Otters, Whales, Dolphins, Seals, loads of other wildlife

Castles, fascinating (and sad) deserted villages, distilleries, Galleries, lovely Italian restaurant, fantastic pubs, real beer

truly wild and beautiful

We're going back next year in May, the only time we've ever been anywhere twice.

That actually looks incredibly beautiful. I meet lots of americans here (in Granada) who rave about Mull and other isles. Why the heck do we all fly a million miles when great stuff like this is just up the road (relatively speaking).

Pointing a finger at myself here also.

Sunshine I guess?

Yeah it is the weather. When the weather is good I think the Scottish Highlands are the greatest place on the planet, a playground paradise. However it pisses down half the time.

In all seriousness, I think the British Isles should be up there as an entire entity, its got a combination of geography, history and culture thats hard to beat - even including the horrible bits. :)

There are horrible bits

White Island off the coast of NZ. Very active volcano. Ground shaking under you as soon as you arrive!

I know its a shock, but there are one or two areas that leave something to be desired. I was saying just this very thing to Captain Carruthers recently...

Three places:

watching the sun go down over the Hebrides from the Stien Inn on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. I've camped there more than once, the owners of the Inn are friendly, don't mind you using the field next door to pitch your tent and will let you use their shower in the morning.

Watching the sun go down from the end of the pier in Bonaire, one of the Dutch Antiles in the Caribbean. Classic Bob Marly playing from the thatched bar, beautiful parrot fish in the water. I almost proposed to my missus there, but I waited until machu picchu.

But the best island by far - Kantaing on Koh Lanta, Thailand. It was 4 years ago, no idea what its like now but I could fill the forum database waxing lyrical about the beach, weather, sunsets and people there. After letting off fireworks on the beach and leaving to go to another island when we came back to Kantiang one of the outfits on the beach had a firework party to recipricate the rockets we let off. And cooked prawn crackers and nibbles for the entire bar. Why? Just because. That's why its my favourite.

isla mujeres, just off the coast of mexico, near cancun, went there about 20 years ago, we were busing it through mexico, stopped in cancun, it was an awful place, saw the island off the coast and got a little ferry over there, stayed a week, wonderful place, it was really non-touristy then, no idea what it's like now

also liked barra in the outer hebrides, went there in 82 on a geography field trip and stayed a week, had an excellent time

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isla_Mujeres

just had a read up on it, it's only 650 metres wide, amd 7 km long, it seemed bigger when we were there:D

Someone may help me remembering the name of this island (well, sort of island, it gets cut off twice a day by the tide). It's in Lancashire (I think) and I went there about 20 years ago, driven by a friend...there's a grave of a slave there, or possibly on the way there....It was a lovely windswept place anyway.

I just spent the weekend on Salt Spring Island, a Gulf Island off the west coast of British Columbia.

It was so relaxing. I camped at Ruckle Park, I swam in Weston Lake, I hiked a trail, drank lots of Salt Spring Island coffee (an organic and fair trade brand), met some great local artists, hitch-hiked to Ganges from Ruckle Park and then from Ganges to Fulford Harbour and back to Ruckle Park, drank lots of microbrew beer.

The locals were extremely friendly.

I have to say it is one of the best islands I have visited. What's the best you've ever visited, and why?

Bizarrely some of my relatives live there. I can't remember much (16 years ago) but it did seem nice. :)

Lamu in Kenya is pretty amazing - lovlely people, ok food, amazing town, good beaches, amazing culture:

Australia is an island, no?

uh, true lol :) but I thought the question meant other than where you already lived

I'm currently sitting in the business lounge at Keflavik in Iceland. Only been here two days on a stopover but this place rules. Just been to the Blue Lagoon and feel great. Went out last night and had a blast, got drunk on Brennevin and pulled the most gorgeous icelandic girl.
I am definitely going to come back here and spend more time (and hopefully less money) exploring.

Another vote to the Gili Islands off the coast of Lombok in Indonesia. I originally come from Bali and its nice to leave Bali when I'm visiting Indonesia and head over to the Gili's for a few days. Although there seems to be more and more gap year idiots wearing beads and shouting at locals.
