As I'm forced to choose one, New Day Rising, but Candy Apple Gray is great.
I have fond memories of going to inter-railing, and every time I got to a new European city, they were playing that night - saw them several times.
Insane workrate they had.
New Day Rising and Flip Your Wig were within 6 mths of each other but both tail off a bit at the end for me. I've always thought if they'd just put out the one album that year with the best of both sets on it then you'd have about as great a record as you could ever possibly wish for.
Some of fat (well, maybe a touch of premature middle age spread was more like it) Bob's solo stuff was as good as HD IMO, for entirely different reasons - see Mould's solo 'Black Sheets Of Rain' and Sugar's 'Copper Blue' for proof.
i kept the faith with Sugar - saw their first UK gigs, bought everything. but there was a point stood in Brixton Academy, halfway through a gig on their F.U.E.L. tour, when my friend Nick and I turned to each other, grimaced and walked out. seeing the marvellous Madder Rose in support was far better.
but then, yes, saw Bob at Camden Underworld - just him and his demons - and he fair flayed my skin off
