Blackalicious 'Blazing Arrow'

I LOVE that album

also handsome boy modelling school - white people and skinnyman - council estate of the mind (not too sure if thats classed as hip hop mind....)

Liquid Swords is another one of my favourite all time albums, and songs. GZA GZA Genius. (I went to look at the lyrics then to post some, but there is not one bad part of that song).

I think liking Wu Tang doesn't even need to be said in this day and age.

Built 4 Cuban Lynx is a very good album, but I have to admit it is not quite to my taste. Not saying it is bad though.

I already had Lupe Fiasco as well, very cool, very much what I was looking for.

I don't know if I mentioned it in the OP, but I was expecting more from Talib Kweli, but I just was not impressed at all. Then again, I only have his latest album (ear drum). Can anyone recommend me a better one?

Beautiful struggle is kwelis best work. Also try to grab Right about now(the official suka free mixtape) there are some quality tunes on that.

You should probabley check out jedi mind tricks as well. Legacy of blood in paticular.

Oh and while i'm at it anyone who doesn't love bone thugs n harmony is a bit silly. E 1999 eternal is amazing. So good to smoke to.(guess what i'm doing)

NWA, Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Snoop, Wu-Tang and all their projects, Ultramagnetic MCs, Cypress Hill, 2 Live Crew, DJ Assault if he counts as hip hop, Beastie Boys, Lil Jon, Missy Elliot, Ludacris, although I suspect these won't set your world alight based on other folks' suggestions.

yeah but that's all reeeeally old quite poppy stuff, try listening to something made less that 10 years ago, hiphop had come a long way since then and is still evolving

My favourite is Black on Both Sides by Mos Def.
which is only let down by that track ms big booty - otherwise a flawless record. shame later albums were weak.

nation of millions is always voted no1 rap album of all time by fans - i cant argue with that. Chuck D, KRS, and Rakim are the old school trinity.

Best UK rap record of all time, for me, is MC Mello - Thoughts Unleashed - beg borrow steal a copy - THe first Roots Manuva album a close second. Mello never got the respect he deserves. Id even go so far as to put Soul II Soul's first album in position number 3 - I love JAzzie B on the mic.

For something new out of the UK I was blown away by this: Soweto Kinch's last album:

A Life in the Day of B19: Tales of the Tower Block
great, fresh fresh lyrics

Kool keith as octagon is a true classic album - dug it out the other day - got ten years on it now- still brilliant. other kool keith stuff is great but this just got it right.

dela soul 3 feet, jungle brothers forces of nature and tribe's midnight marauders are all high high highlights. Listened to DeLa's Stakes is HIgh again the other day, and thats got classsic written all over it too.

talking of old school, who remembers this?

also Ice T had a few deep tunes - i love this: lethal weapon (the lethal weapons my mind!):

Crackers this year include...

The Nextmen - This Was Supposed To Be The Future (not just hip hop but reggae, dancehall, soul and funk!). Check out their DJ mix albums.

Kidz In The Hall - School Is My Hustle (Rawkus back on form)

Pharohe Monch - The Push (70's ghetto soul samples and an fantastic cover/rendition of PE's Welcome To The Terradome) - buy or steal it!!!

Pretty damn short list.

Mine's got about 20 on it.

:)

That's a recommendation, no?

:p ;)

It's not my favourite record, tbh, but if you like the Lupe, it's of a similar nature... and it's whole lot better than Kanye

Don't think he's been mentioned but you should check out Black Milk's album called Popular Demand. Brilliant lyricism and the production is spot on too, you can hear the Dilla influences but that's a good thing IMO.

And by extension, Slum Village.

And another vote for Zion I (and the Grouch) - Heroes In The City Of Dope is a great album.

Eh? In what way is DJ Assault "poppy"? And I think Missy's genius has been in the way that she's taken abstract forms more akin to Warp and Rephlex and transported them to the mainstream hip hop sphere. Is "poppy" simply popular?

Oh, and her, Luda and Lil Jon have all sprung forth in the last ten years. In my list I tried to select a bunch of acts from across the generations.

In the words of Kamanchi Sly "Missy ain't a spitter".

Au contraire;

"Quiet!!!!!!! sssshhhhhh, hush yo mouth
Silence when i, spit it out
{*hach-ptoo*}.. in yo face
Open your mouth, give you a taste"

She is the almighty queen bitch.

Put Missy back in her box Jean Grae would unleash a can of 'WHOOP-ASS' on her! (Though granted her beats don't always match her skills on the mic)

first jeru the damaja album (he's being chatting weird god shit lately)
first blahzay blahzay album
first ultramagnetics album
most of gangstarrs stuff
shit the first fucking Group Home album that was deadly and funny

Big L and Lord Finesse - I agree.

And for Kool Keith, I recommend the album Black Elvis/Lost in space.

Apparently Ultramagnetic are performing a one-off reunion show in NYC on 20 October, if anyone's got any airmiles knocking around.

Shit, that would be worth hearing. Just to hear 'Moe Luv's Theme' and 'Chorus Line' live would be something.

Incidentally, I'm currently putting together a bit of a cd compilation of Hip Hop and Electro Funk which is spanning quite a few cds. If you want a copy (or should I say copies) let me know TB.

BB:)
