Best Hip Hop?

NWA, Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Snoop, Wu-Tang and all their projects, Ultramagnetic MCs, Cypress Hill, 2 Live Crew, DJ Assault if he counts as hip hop, Beastie Boys, Lil Jon, Missy Elliot, Ludacris, although I suspect these won't set your world alight based on other folks' suggestions.

This is a good list...well, except for the 2Live Crew part. :D

And you can get the Beastie Boys out of it as well. From preposterous penis-headed boys to pretentious buddhist wannabee artist twits in just a few easy steps.

Can't beat a bit of Gangstarr, have a listen to Step in the Arena. As is Nas, his latest album Hip Hop is Dead was a stunner.
yeah, was just reading through wondering how long before someone mentioned gang starr; i couldn't recommend enough that you check them out, i cant imagine how someone who liked mos def could not like them (or even how they could not prefer them); premier is a fantastic producer, and him and guru seem to bring out the best in each other; step in the arena is great, but imo, the few albums after that are probably a wee bit better, sounding a bit more refined; for nas id alsoc recommend checking out illmatic, it's classic; and as for someone mentioning bizarre ride II the pharcyde, if you like that, check out labcab in california, imo their best

Yes, Illmatic was a classic album. His last but one was good as well but I can't remember the title. The Jazzmattaz albums by Guru were a bit patchy but contained some very good listenable tunes as well, coming from a very different perspective to his work with Premier (what a producer ).

Tribe called Quest - Midnight Marauders

Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions…

Nas - Illmatic

Mos and Talib – Black Star

and many more...

if you like your primo have a listen to royce da 5"9's bar exam. A danm good lyricsts witha danm nice flow over all of primos beast beats, tis good stuff.

I was going to mention gangstarr but haven't really heard anything other then the greatest hits.

Have a listen to Daily Operation, cos along with Step in the Arena, you'll be hearing some seminal hip hop sounds

DM & Jemini 'Ghetto Pop Life' is a fav of mine too.
i also think a lot of ghostfaces stuff from the last few years is well worth checking out.

Stavros i dont think you quite understand what he is looking for. That said raekwon - only built for cuban links is quite possibly up his street.
He just said hip hop as good as those, and I think all the ones I suggested are at least as good if not better. Personal preference I guess. The GZA's "Liquid Swords" and the RZA's "Ghost Dog" might tally with the Mos Def/DJ Shadow/J5 crowd too. And of course the peerless "Enter The Wu...".

Not really into hip hop but i'm doing a tune with dead rappers and I particularly like Big L's rhymes:

"Aiyo you better flee hops, or getcha head flown three blocks"

You've got to have a bit of Big Daddy Kane in there as well.

Just to reiterate -none of that retro J5 bollocks. Puh-lease

This Years best...so far

Crackers this year include...

The Nextmen - This Was Supposed To Be The Future (not just hip hop but reggae, dancehall, soul and funk!). Check out their DJ mix albums.

Kidz In The Hall - School Is My Hustle (Rawkus back on form)

Pharohe Monch - The Push (70's ghetto soul samples and an fantastic cover/rendition of PE's Welcome To The Terradome) - buy or steal it!!!

Was listening to Prince Po - The Slickness again whilst bumbling around town earlier on; I know it's from three years ago, but it really is very good indeed.

The newer one, Prettyblack is better.

Me not love you long time. ;)

Seriously, how can you not love a hip hop song which starts with the "Sweet Child Of Mine" hook and then moves into a vivid portrait of a brothel? As far as rap topics go, large female buttocks are pretty great.
