Best gadgets/technology for keeping track of your life?

GPS equivalent? Would you run TomTom off it?

Yep, standard phone keyboard, but then that's fine for my use. I struggled with a qwerty, but then given time I'd have got used to it.

yeah, it could work for that. Works on triangulation between receivers by all accounts. Not sure of the tecjnical aspects, but it seems to work flawlessly.

I'd be very, very surprised if it was remotely useable at anything over walking pace. Besides, I thought triangulation could only ever be accurate to 100m? Decent GPS is accurate to the foot! I can track myself walking from my front door, round the side gate, and into my garden on Google maps!

Accurate to within a few hundred feet, apparently. Good for a start point for directions, but useless for actual navigation. I believe the article also stats you'd need an N95 for that purpose ;)

Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is a nice bit of kit, but it's chosen style over extended substance. Perfect for large numbers of end users, but doesn't compare to a proper smartphone for advanced functionality.

That might be enough for beeboo, but no good for me. The N95 8GB is the first phone since the SE K750i that's been a pleasure to use. The massive array of features doesn't hurt either.

Yeah I know it does loads more, just wanted make sure the op knew they didn't have to get the expense of one just for the PIM features. Not used one myself, but used lots of other s60 phones over the years, have they changed the os much for the N95?

I prefer some of my gadgets seperate myself, digital camera takes better pics and my gps is rain resistant, durable and the batteries last for ever, but guess this has been done before on other threads.

Na, you make a very valid point, and it's no so much that it does loads more (although of course it does), it just does it loads faster I just think the N95 8GB is worth any potential extra. As I said before, I used the N73 and whilst it offered similar functionality, it was painfully slow.

Seperate gadgets will always piss on a phone, but the N95 8GB does an admirable job of all functions. More than enough for my needs.

That said, I do still use an old SPV M600 with bluetooth GPS unit for my TomTom needs.

How does it compare to a dedicated unit? Currently waying up getting an gps receiver for my E61 or getting a Tom Tom, but never used either so not sure I have much to compare it to.

Edit: Nokia can be weird sometimes, the N80 that replace my 6680 was slower and the battery lasted noticably less time.

Apart from usability and being half as much fun to use. Snot bad, but I'd take the iphone every time all things being equal. I doubt it'll lack anything that Beeboo will actually neeed to use.
I think both the N95 and the iPhone are massive overkill for her needs.

No. it's not proper GPS and if I recall correctly, you can't even use proper GPS software because Apple won't let people install class leading GPS programs like Tom Tom. In fact, can you even use any Bluetooth GPS units with Apple?

Still, none of this is much use to the OP.

Perhaps, but it's not much more outlay for a better piece of kit.

From the sounds of things beeboo would use the camera, the 8gb hdd for mp3s, mail/contacts/calendar/tasks, the phone, perhaps some mobile internet. the N95 8GB does all these in a best of breed way (I'll concede that Palm has more apps available, but I bet beeboo couldn't be fucked keeping up with all that, she'll want out of the box functionality).

Its a substantially bigger outlay (2.5 x price!) and she'd still end up with worse PIM functionality, less flexible email and poorer task management tools compared to the Palm.

If the Centro camera isn't up to her needs, there's still loads of mid priced feature phones that would give her a mix of what she wants for way, waaay less than the high end N98.

But no-one ever buys handsets without a contract, apat from business users. My N95 8GB was free, at launch n' all, and that's on a relatively meagre £30/pm contract.

It is 18 months, but annoyingly that's pretty much par for the course these days.

But she'll have a stunningly easier phone use. Not sure if you've noticed but (a) not everyone is you and (b) not everyone wants a Centro...

But she'll have a stunningly easier phone use.
(a) It'll cost her about three times as much with no real benefit to her listed needs
(b) she didn't ask for an eye wateringly expensive 'style' phone
(c) PIM functionality is one of the iPhone's weakest points.

Great advice!
Heh that made me laugh, I love 'pointing out the obvious' humour.
Yes! It was truly hilarious! Thanks for sharing!

She asked for a simple way of keeping het computer sync'd with her phone. I didn't see a budget constraint. With an iPhone you put it into the stand. It syncs. You take it out. No spoddy third party applications to install on the phone. (Some of which are discontinued anyway.)

Apparently there's an app for the Centro called "Senso-umour"...
:D

Two reviews:
iPhone
It's the best portable media player ever. It's possibly the most fun we've ever had with a handheld device. It browses the Web like a champ.....
Poor business e-mail and PIM connectivity. Bad audio quality on phone calls

The Centro isn't a revolutionary, cutting edge device. But in its own way, it's starting a quiet revolution: this is the first touch screen PDA or smartphone to sell for only $99 at introduction. And it covers all the basics well: good phone quality, quality streaming media and MP3 playback support (once you get a hold of a stereo headset), the usual Palm ease of use, strong PIM apps to keep you organized and a QWERTY keyboard that's sure to please former feature phone users who are tired of T9. And we're happy to see Documents To Go 10 included with support for reading, editing and creating Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. Power users will want to look at the Palm OS and Windows Mobile Treos or other competing power user smartphones, but for those who don't need everything but the kitchen sink, the Centro is worth a look.

'Nuff said.

How does it handle note, to dos, memos, lists? What organiser software is there for the iPhone? How about list management/GTD software? Email?

The iPhone is a great multimedia phone with a fantastic interface, but it's one of the worst smartphones when it comes to mundane things like PIM/office/email/organiser functionality. And that - if I'm not mistaken - was what the poster was asking about.

What part of "easy to use" don't you understand...? And you're arguing the toss over the a mobile phone at 12:30 on a Friday night. F*ck me, some people are relentless... Um... Why...?

Argue with yourself... I'm off to bed... :D

I'm proper scared :D

Well I think I've got enough pointers to go have a play about with some of these phones and see what I like :)

Always the best idea..! Everyone has an opinion on what they like, but after all its what *you* need that matters... Anytime I see a mate with a new phone I have a good play with it to see if its any good...

Well I'm sure you'll all be fascinated to hear that I went out an bought....

...a paper diary! :p :D

Which is actually working out rather well, and I'm enjoying scribbling all my appointments and to-do lists in it

Although after all that, it turns out my new job comes with a Blackberry anyway

I use my head, and two assistants.:)

I use my phone - for everything I think! Calendar covers most of it - like 'go shopping', the shopping list is in notes in organiser - cat food, dog food, bread, milk. Delete as you leave the checkout. :D MP3 player, radio, good enough camera for me, video, battery life seems ok - it does me well enough anyway.

Its just a nokia 6500 slide but it manages to organise most of my life, and I like it - and the alarm gets me out of bed in the morning!

I'd be stuck if I lost it though. No back up you see. :o and :(

You want to sort that out!

I go for the belt and braces approach - my phone automatically backs up to the memory card every night, I sync all my info to my desktop PC most nights and also make backs ups ever so often on my other machine. I might even use a free service that lets me wireless backup to a remote server to be triple sure (without my phone, I'm lost!).

It's also protected by some clever apps that let me send a text message to delete everything on the phone if it gets nicked and even have it sneakily text me number of the thief who's just put in their SIM card!
