Best gadgets/technology for keeping track of your life?

Bit of a moot point that really though isn't it. Whatever the flaws of the Palm UI, it's way better than the bloated, menu-aplenty approach of Windows Mobile.

The iphone/touches ain't that bad for PIM stuff if you do the bulk of your organisation on computer (mac especially) and only need to make the odd entry on the road.
As a multimedia device, the iPhone kicks all the Palm devices way into touch, but when it comes to PIM functions, the Palm whips the iPhone.

There are some incredible, productivity-increasing programs out there on the Palm for diary/calender/note taking/GTD/email, some of them the best of class.

I've never found the equal of programs like Agendus, NoteStudio, LifeBalance and Chatteremail elsewhere but as soon as I find that kind of fantastic usability and functionality, I'll be happy to jump ship to another platform.

That's probably the most likely scenario. I'm desk based most of the time at work and that's where I do most of my "organising".

I would like a reasonable camera on my phone as well, must be said. It's a consideration.

I suppose a simple, usable PIM function which communicates easily with whatever calendar system I'm using at work + a camera, are my top priorities.

The Centro camera is only average but there's a load of excellent tools for organising your life (calendar/lists/note/PIM etc) that sync across the desktop to your Palm.

Eme uses the ridiculously advanced and flexible LifeBalance program, but we both swear by Agendus - it's very, very user friendly and runs on the desktop and Palm.

Then I'd definitely recommend the N95 8GB. it's just a fantastic all-rounder full of next-gen features. If you get it on three then it's free with a new contract.

I might wait to see what the email system is at your new work though, if it's MS Exchange and Outlook, as is likely, then it's perfect for your needs. If not, there are probably other considerations.

Will you be copying items direct from your work computer...? Or will you be using your own computer for your personal items/social life...?

Expect (subject to whatever the setup is in new workplace) I'll primarily use my work computer and will need to sync up with that.

Will you be able to install drivers and such onto the computer...? Could rule out an iPhone as it would need iTunes, and Nokia's use their own drivers (AFAIK)

I use iCal on the mac at work and auto sync it with my home computer every hour or so (requires .mac account). It also syncs all my addresses, stickies and bookmarks. I'm not exactly what you would call organised though...

e2a - my Nokia 6280 won't sync to my mac for some reason.

C0uldn't you buy an isync plugin from Feisar or similar though - it cost about a mighty £3 to connect my SE phone up (until it was 'officially' added to isync)

I'm not sure if Beeboo needs all that though. I got the feeling that she was after comparatively basic reminders of meetings, tasks and events, just in an easy to sync and use way. The isync/multiple calendars stuff should be more than enough for the vast majority of people.

Sounds like me - nothing complex, just reminders like "10AM MEETING" and "BUY CAT FUD!" :)

If it's difficult to use or sync, I won't do it and I'll just have a gadget I don't use.

Apart from usability and being half as much fun to use. Snot bad, but I'd take the iphone every time all things being equal. I doubt it'll lack anything that Beeboo will actually neeed to use.

However, as the N95 is often free on contract, it's not nearly as clear-cut.

Need to use???? Since when did we really NEED mobile phones in the first place???

Nah, I mean that - by the sound of Beeboo's requirements - there'll be everything she feels she needs on a device like the iphone. Ok, it may not be a feature stuffed beast and jack of all trades, but the things it does do it does exceptionally well.

Not really, the N95 8GB is far, far faster, has the 8GB drive, 3.5mm headphone socket. These are what I'd consider to the important features. Prior to the N95 8GB I hd an N73 and it was a bag of shit.

Being fun to use pales into significance after a while. The lack of keyboard would really grate. No GPS, no Exchange email / ActiveSync (crucial for me). It's not even a consideration for me, no matter how slick.

The usability on the N95 8GB is fine.

I would like to state that the standard N95 isn't worth it, however. it has to be the 8GB revision.

Not to mention the 5MP camera.. nice and fast, unlike most phone cameras.

iPhone does do Exchange Email.

Keyboard is great once used to it too.

(Just correcting, not suggesting an iPhone ;))

Phone sounds impressive admittedly, but I just didn't like the UI when I cocked around on it.

My boss had one of the earlier N95's admittedly, with the shit battery life, but isn't it a sliding 'ordinary' phone keyboard?

iphone can handle Exchange btw, and has a GPS equivalent.

Does it matter when the N95 is free?? ;)

But its not free. You have to get an expensive 18 month contract.

Unless they've changed it, then you will get all the PIM functions from an older series 60 model.

A quick look shows you can get an unlocked 6680 of ebay for about £25.

GPS equivalent? Would you run TomTom off it?

Yep, standard phone keyboard, but then that's fine for my use. I struggled with a qwerty, but then given time I'd have got used to it.

That might be enough for beeboo, but no good for me. The N95 8GB is the first phone since the SE K750i that's been a pleasure to use. The massive array of features doesn't hurt either.
