picked up 'bugsy malone' on video in a charity shop last week (a birthday present to myself :D ) and spent all day singing all the songs, and rewinding and singing them again.

bugsy malone rocks!

:)

"let friendship double up our powers"

Never much liked musicals, but Cabaret is an awesome movie. When the Hitler Youth sing "Tomorrow belongs to me" and the camera zooms in on the swastika at the end, it was one of the most stunning and powerful moments of any movie I've seen.
And if we're including Disney, as a kid I played the Jungle Book LP until it wore away, and shed tears with my own kids at Lion King.

The umbrellas of Cherbourg, definitely. Great story, music, cinematography. One of my all time favourite films , it makes me sob like a baby evey time I watch it. And Catherine Deneuve is fantastic in it.

Recently picked up Umbrellas of Cherbourg on video.
Pure heaven.

My five year old niece is a real musical fan, she knows all the songs to Mary Poppins and Sound of Music, even uses her own "props" while she sings along to the videos!
A theatrical career beckons. :)

*wanders off singing to self*

so you wanna be a boxer ...

It's a tie between The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music although The Wall does get a bit of a look in on this one.

So many to choose from...

wot about 8 mile?
I like Kismet too, the one woith Stranger In Paradise in it and lots of bellydance costumes in glorious techinoclour

Favourite would have to be Cabaret & I dislike musicals with a passion. Although I do like Floyd - The Wall & some of the Noel Coward/Cole Porter/Rogers & Hammerstein stuff is very good.

An American in Paris - Great music and Gene Kelly is a babe.
Moulin Rouge - Great dancing and fantastic reinterpretation of pop songs.
Cabaret - Grown up musical
Mary Poppins - fun for the family

another vote for Singin in the Rain, and the opening sequence to On The Town is sublime, and the dancing on the piano scene in an American In Paris is great

and then there's all the Fred and Ginger ones ....

I went for 'other' - it's got to be Singing In The Rain for me - those great tunes that stick in your head, and Donald O'Connor's dancing (wiped the floor with Gene Kelly, IMO)
(and does Some Like It Hot count as a musical? Love that too!)

For me its the Wizard of Oz,

but I'm also a big fan of Oklahoma, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Guys and Dolls, Show Boat, West Side Story.

I prefer the old ones to the newer ones as i think the cheese is too much with the new ones. The old ones can get away with because they are old!

Oooh yes and Cabaret

Blood Brothers by Willy Russell about two twins seperated at birth in Liverpool. One has a working-class upbringing, the other dead posh la. Good stuff.

I went for the "other" option, as after a great deal of thought, I have to say
"Singing in the Rain"
All the characters, even the minor ones are a joy, and the music and the dancing are just fantastic.

Having said that, watching my daughter sing along to almost the whole of "The Sound of Music" is enough to brighten up any day :D
