Best Fall Album?

Just listening to 'Perverted By Language' for the first time in ages atm. Bloody wonderful, it is. 'Garden's on at the mo - I like them when they get a bit epic. :)

I can't say one best album. Got into them via The Wonderful and Frightening World of, had major flings with Perverted by Language and Bend Sinister and a really serious relationship with Hex Enduction Hour, but now would possibly answer the question with Live at the Witch Trials.

Can't listen to tham at all this past year tho :D

Why is it only men who like the Fall?

Only conjecturing here, but there's the nerdy completist psyche which is more prevelent in men who may measure themselves on number of Fall albums owned, and to generalise maybe more men listened to John Peel?

last time i went to see 'em, there was probably 60/40 men to women, which is a pretty normal ratio.

not all the women were girlfriends either...

Not in my experience, 90/10 is more like it. I've never known a woman who liked the Fall either. How many women have posted on this thread?

i've no idea how many women have posted on the thread, although admittedly all the usernames who's gender i do know belong to men...

anyway, i've no idea why more blokes than ladies love the fall: it is a trend i've noticed in experimental rock music in general though...

So many, and one to suit your every mood or caprice.

Hex Enduction Hour, of course.
Perverted By Language
This Nation's Saving Grace
The Infotainment Scan
Bend Sinister

Most of my favourites are taken so I'll go for Shiftwork, which was probably the third or fourth I'd heard. Classic line-up though.

TBH, their erratic nature and ridiculous work-rate means that for me, the only way to enjoy a reasonable cross-section of what makes them good, is a compilation.

I know the real fans/purists will scoff, but fuck you all.

Is there one? :o

I only know Live at the Witch Trials and a few other early bits and pieces, I rate their uniqueness and MES's insanity, but I'm deeply ignorant about the vastest majority of their stuff ....

I've just finished reading The Fallen, Dave Simpson's very entertaining book about tracking down every member of The Fall.

is Kenny Brady mentioned in it? he was in the fall for a couple of years, when mark was staying in Edinburgh. Played on shiftwork & extricate, sung on a few songs and played fiddle and synth.

please PM me if so.

Oh, yea, in response to this thread - SHIFT-WORK. some fucking brilliant songs on that and it was the soundtrack to a pretty mental time in Edinburgh :)

Yes, he gets a short chapter. Mate of yours?

The first Fall LP I heard was This Nation's Saving Grace and it's still my favourite. I'm also fond of Bend Sinister, which doesn't seem to register too highly with many Fall fans. Then Perverted By Language, Hex, Country On the Click and ... all the other ones following closely behind.

Mine would have to be the The Infotainment Scan. However I would much rather have the gig they played for sound city on Radio 1 about this time. It was a cracking show and my first ever experience of The Fall. (I wasn't there but I did tape it).

Don't suppose anyones got a copy of it?

Its dead good.
