Flying Lizards - Money A deliberately cheap'n'nasty cover that transcended its origins big-time.

they did a stack of fine covers, including 'sex machine' (which is on one of my urburns, fact fans :)), and the singer did a nice track with richard x too

if that's what i think it is, then there's a whole album to d/l - 'white lines' is superb

I'd like to see a nude opera, because when they hit high notes, I bet you can really see it in their genitals.

there is a faster version of 'i'll stop the world and "melt with you"' (dunno the actual song title see, and there is a version by modern english (the original i think) and i think its the cure who did the cover.

both really good i think i prefer the cover by the cure - but did i get my facts right, anyone?

seems somewhat garbled to me.
'I Melt With You' was originally by Modern English and I would think it's the faster version of which you speak. The Bossa Nova version that's recently appeared in some advert or other is by Nouvelle Vague - who curiously have not yet surfaced on this thread (?) from a whole album of new wave covers done in similar stylee - 'Too Drunk To Fuck' a particular highlight. suprised the magnificent Senor Coconut hasn't received a mention either - Kraftwerk covers with Latin rhythms works suprisingly well and a top version of 'Smoke On The Water'.
As for The Cure covering Modern English, I just can't see it. With the (possible) exception of 'I Melt With You' everyone and their mother thinks they were utter cock. The Cure, for a band who've been around so long, have not been prolific in the covers department (when he does finally call it a day wouldn't a vegas-y covers album be just the funniest way for it all to end?)
but anyway, I remember they used to do Gary Glitter's 'Do You Wanna Touch?' around the time of 'The Head On The Door' 'cos Smith thought they were getting taken too seriously again but I don't think it's a joke they'll be repeating considering events in the meantime....................................
