best cover versions... ever! [volume ad nauseam]

I'm rather drunk and haven't possted here for a while!

Walk on By - the Stranglers - made me cry in Asda carpark!!

House of the Rising Sun - the Animals - this made me grow up musically

All along the Watchtower - Hendrix - what can you say? :D

Hybrid Kids - Do You Think I'm Sexy?

- Devastatingly creative destruction of the Rod Stewart unreconstructed 70s male poseathon.

Flying Lizards - Money

- Destructively creative devastation of the Berry Gordy materialist rock'n'roll classic.

Laibach - Opus Dei (Life is Life)

- Transcendentally collectivist re-actualisation of the original hippy-idealistic pop that brings it into accord with the profoundly politically ambiguous principles of Neue Slowenische Kunst.

The Ukrainians - Anarchy in the UK
They Might Be Giants - New York City (original by Cub)
Young Gods - Did You Miss Me
The Fall - Victoria
The Replacements - Radio Free Europe, Like a rollin Stone, If I Only Had A Brain (all their covers, played drunk or fairly sober, are great)
Fatima Mansions - Shiny Happy People
Husker Du - 8 Miles High
Galaxie 500 - Ceremony
Shonen Knife - Daydream Believer

Utterly incorrect
:D

TOILET !

Some excellent choices on here. A couple more of my favourites are:

Roxy Music - Jealous Guy
The Clash - Police & Thieves
Electric 6 - Radio GaGa
Mike Flowers Pops - Wonderwall
Moby - New Dawn Fades (Live)

G 'N R: Knocking on Heavens Door
Bauhaus: Ziggy Stardust
Bauhaus: Telegram Sam
Johnny Cash: Personal Jesus
Hendrix: All Along the Watchtower

am i the only person who thought the bauhaus cover of ziggy stardust was weak? pretty pointless as far as covers go, as it remains totally faithful to the original...

anyway, here's mine...

miles davis - time after time
dave clarke/chicks on speed - she's in parties
johnny cash - the mercy seat

and, of course, alice donut & killdozer - the dawning of the age of aquarius

Reel Big Fish - Ska/Punk version of Take on Me by Aha

Earl Zinger - Dub version of Song 2 by Blur

Easy Dub All Stars - Dub Side of the Moon (I think you can guess what they've done there)

Faith No More's bluesy version of the Dead Kennedys' "Let's Lynch the Landlord" on the Alternative tentacles "Virus 100" comp, along with Mojo Nixon's cover of "Winnebago Warrior" on the same album.

Dillinger Escape Plan Ft. Mike Patton - Come To Daddy (Aphex Twin)

just for the simple fact that to pull it off playing conventional instruments is mindblowing, Mike Patton's vocal range is just ridiculous.

whoever did that hillbilly version of 'ace of spades'.
That'll be Hayseed Dixie. Their cover albums "Kiss My Grass - a Hillbilly Tribute to Kiss" and "A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC" have been the soundtrack to my christmas. Better than the originals. :D

Another vote for Hendrix's All along the Watchtower.

White Rabbit - June Tabor and the Oystyer Band (they also do All Along the Watchtower)

Frank Bennett.....creep
Frank Bennett ....under the bridge
(sublime jazz swing versions of both songs!)
Johnny Cash ......Personal Jesus
Motorhead.......God save the Queen
Hendrix....Star Spangled Banner
(in fact the Hendrix version of God save the Queen as well!)
HaySeed Dixies ....Let there be rockgrass( I know everyone else has said this but it is an ace album )

Some remixes that IMO are classic covers..

Love23 e.p. don`t know who did it but "Take a Walk " combined with Kelis "Milkshake"....sublime electro!
On the same tip...Adam Freeland...Smells like Freeland
Si Begg ....don`t know it`s name but it`s "Bitter Sweet Symphony" mixed with "Superstar"...classic!
In fact most of the Noodles albums...!

.p.

there is a faster version of 'i'll stop the world and "melt with you"' (dunno the actual song title see, and there is a version by modern english (the original i think) and i think its the cure who did the cover.

both really good i think i prefer the cover by the cure - but did i get my facts right, anyone?

Hendrix-Watchtower
Johnny Cash-Personal jesus/Hurt
Muse-Feeling good (OK, so it's not incredible, but still pretty cool)
Rico-Psycho Killer
Tori Amos-Heart of Gold

Nirvana - Man Who Sold the World, Where Did You Sleep Last night from Unpugged
Pixies - Head On
Also agree with the St Etienne cover of Only Love Can Break Your Heart.
Saw Manic Street Preachers do a great cover of Penny Royal tea at reading 1994. Don't know if its available on any cd though.

And of course Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower which is so much better than the original that I bet most people think Hendrix wrote it...
