best cover versions... ever! [volume ad nauseam]

For me, nothing beats Elbow's cover of the Destiny's Child song, "Independant Woman".

I also heard Tura Satana (later Manhole) cover Nirvana's "Negative Creep" live

A few other favourites are:

the Cardigans - "Iron Man" (Black Sabbath)

the Levellers - "Dirty Old Town" (the Spinners?)

Metallica - "Breadfan" (Budgie)

31 posts into the thread and no one has mentioned

THE GOURDS - GIN & JUICE

the stakes have now risen...beat that one

Frank Sidebottom - 'Radio Gaga', 'Timperley Sunset' etc

Splodgenessabounds - 'Yarmouth Five-O'

Nick Cave - 'The Singer'

Age Of Chance - 'Kiss'

I believe Dirty Old Town is a Ewan McColl song.

For me it's got to be the Sensitive New Age Cowpersons doing a bluegrass version of the Bee Gees 'Stayin' Alive' complete with banjo solo.....

Nick Cave doing In The Ghetto

Vanilla Fudge's version of Some Velvet Morning is good too Iam, but then it's a great song

Urge Overkill's version of You'll be a Woman Soon

Yeah, I ummed and aaaahed about including it, cos my fave's still probably the Lee & Nancy version, but in the end I thought... "they won't know that" :D

just remembered, the 2k (klf)/acid brass rendering of a guy called gerald's 'voodoo ray' always gets them rocking in klub krs

"Anarchiia" (Anarchy in the UK in Ukrainian) The Ukrainians

"3 AM Eternal" Extreme Noise Terror

"I think We're Alone Now" Snuff

"Straight Edge" NoFx

"Close to Me" The Getup Kids

"Don't Cry for me Argentina" Me First and the Gimme Gimmes

"The Smurfs" Wat Tyler

"Just like Heaven" The Cure/Goldfinger/Dinosaur Jr.

some brass band also did a beautiful version of "1000 stars burst open" by the Pale Saints...

...and obscurely (except for for French people maybe) an enite album of solo accordion cover by Loic da Silva of La Ruda Salska tunes...tranquille!

Ah; this has been on my mind lately. I think my old bf. used to have a tape called "Cicone Youth" sp."Che-ko-nee" by Sonic Youth. Anyone?

Em, Billy Bragg doing Woody Guthrie's "I wake up in a dry bed with a Dry Head".

Barbed Wire Love - The Unknown

the SLF song? i'd like to hear that.

Happy Mondays - Step On

P (gibby haines and johnny depps criminally ignored band) - Dancing Queen

Stiff Little Fingers - Johnny Was

Big Black - The Model

The Pogues - And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda

il87jhi8u-

There's a rather superb bluegrass cover of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for" on the "Pickin' On" Series.

I like the Sex Pistols' cover of "No Fun"

And let's not forget the Heptones' masterul cover of "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da" ;)

Loads of the covers on The Basement Tapes that Bob Dylan and the Band did in '67 are excellent, such as Four Strong Winds, Teenage Prayer, Joshua's Gone Barbados etc - all old country and American folk songs, but beautifully done.

The Byrds - My Back Pages (Most of their Dylan covers were dire, but that's an exception)

Joan Baez - Farewell Angelina and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

Er, can't think of any more now but I'm sure I shall...

One of my favourite songs ever (and it just seems better than the Neil Young version, dunno why)

The Clash- Armegideon Time (although they did loads of great covers)
Snow Patrol - Crazy In Love

more later ;)

Balls - I was gonner say the clash's armegedion time.

Nina Simone - I shall be released, mr bojangles, wild is the wind.

whoever did that hillbilly version of 'ace of spades'.

Marianne Faithfull " Working class hero"
Nico " Heroes"
Robert Wyatt " Shipbuilding"
Patti Smith " Gloria"
and not forgetting Rolf Harris' " Stairway to Heavan".
I heard he also did an amusing version of " I touch myself", but I haven't heard it.

I have two great CD's of an excellent Elvis impersonator doing cover including
song to the siren
come as you are and
love will tear us apart

really great stuff
