Best contemporary US director?

the coens and pt anderson spring to mind... don't watch enough films to have a serious opinion though.

They went seriously bad when their first movies were commerically successfull. They had so much money thrown at them for their next films that they were doomed to failure. Sometimes less is more.

If you mean the Coens, I can't disagree more. They made several wonderful films with proper budgets after the likes of Blood Simple and Miller's Crossing.

The Man Who Wasn't There - Haven't seen it.
Fargo - Bored the shorts off me.
Oh Brother Where Art Thou - Miscast, but overall ok. Great soundtrack.
The Big Lebowski. - Liked it. Enjoyed the ironic glimpse into the art world
The Hudsucker Proxy - Dude, you can buy copies of the dvd in the dollar bin.

So you like two, haven't seen one, and dismiss one because it's not popular. Presumably you think Dude, Where's My Car is a better film if it's NOT in the dollar bin? :p

Doesn't really back up your initial claim then :p x 1 million

the hudsucker proxy is a great film.

i have to confess to quite enjoying the ladykillers too, although it's about as pointless as a film could be...

I have a personal movie rating system. You go to the pawnshop, count how many copies of a movie they have. Subtract that number from 10 and you have the a 1 -10 rating system. They must have eight copies of Dude, Where's My Car?

I liked Girl with a Pearl Earring. Not a gigantic hit, but only 1 copy at the pawn shop. So it gets a 9 rating.

There's like 4 copies of The Hudsucker Proxy. YW rating = 6

Well, I've got:

Wes Anderson
The Coens
Paul Thomas Anderson
Darren Aronofsky
Terry Gilliam
David Lynch
Christopher Nolan
Neil LaBute
Spike Jonze
Sofia Coppola
Brad Bird
Cameron Crowe
Richard Linklater
Rian Johnson (director of Brick, one for the future perhaps)

It's a shit system. By that token, something like, I dunno, Titanic is the best film ever.

Blood Simple is the Coen Brothers film to catch. Because of it, I endured movies like Hudsucker, Miller's Crossing, etc., to my disappointment.

I've only seen No Country, which I thought was very good, Big Lebowski, which I found quite overrated, some of Hudsucker, which was alright, and Miller's Crossing, which my brother adores but I found a bit boring TBH.

Its a very useful system.

Its a tad cheaper to buy dvds at the pawn shop and resell any that I don't want to keep, than it is to rent them. If I haven't seen a movie prior to buying it, I need some type of sorting method to avoid spending money unnecessarily.

the man who wasn't there is a GEM of a film. there is one shot (the shot through the doorway of frances macdormand in the bath, for those who've seen it) which is so perfect it brings a lump to my throat every time i see it. the only bad thing about the whole film is scarlett johanssen, who is utterly blank, one- dimensional and pointless as usual.

pt anderson gets my vote. i am so excited about there will be blood i might do a little wee in my knickers when the bbfc certificate comes up. (i probably won't, but i can't make any promises). daniel day lewis chews scenery and pta directs it? move the furniture to the edges of the room, i'm about to have a moviegasm!
