best Clash album other than london calling

I've never actually heard 'give em enough rope', is it any good at all?
Yes, it has Tommy Gun, English Civil War, and All The Young Punks. The production is a bit too slick, in my opinion. But the drum sound is astonishing. The third best of their first three albums. Therefore their third best album.

I feel like a Vietnam vet - "You weren't there. You don't know!" - but the title of this thread sent me into apoplexy. Specifically the "apart from" bit. The greatest Clash album, and to my mind one of the ten greatest albums by anyone, is the first one. The later stuff, as Strummer himself said at the time, represented the producer, "Trying to turn us into Fleetwood Mac."

I also saw them -twice - at Southampton Top Rank in 1977 and at Leeds Univesity in 1978.

Not forgetting "Safe European home"!

.

I saw them twice in Bristol, in 1980 and 1981, both gigs were superb, The Clash live were a completly different thing compared to the records. There's some great bootlegs around, worth finding if you love The Clash. Check out Black Market Clash for definitive reviews of every gig. http://homepage.mac.com/blackmarketclash/

It was produced by Sandy Pearlman who also produced a number of Blue Oyster Cult albums.

And The Dictators 'Go Girl Crazy', another great LP from the rockier shores of punk rock...which is where I'd place GEER (the most underated Clash album?).

The first lp is the best.

Tommy Gun is a fucking dreadful, turgid dirge. One of dopiest ever moments. GEER has got a couple of good tracks, and a shedload of half-arsed, self-aggrandising wank. It's shite!

I think thats true but i dont think they'd have got famous if they'd done 3 albums just like the first one.

Hearing sandinista as a spotty teenager made me realise that boundaries not only could, but should be broken in music/art/life and thats a good thing imo

Which is probably why it sounds so freeze dried.

I think pigeon's comments are better suited to Sandinista, though. "has got a couple of good tracks, and a shedload of half-arsed, self-aggrandising wank."

What about the Cost of Living EP? Alright it only had four tracks, but two of them were good. So it should be considered an honorary album.

Well, it has got a fair bit of half arsed wank, granted. But it's not especially self-aggrandising.;)

I like my music but I'm no muso[/quote

Cut the Crap - done without Mick or Topper (after they'd both been sacked) later disowned.
haven't heard it but it's got a reputation for living up the end of it's title.

I love This Is England though - very underated. Heard We Are The Clash yesterday - like it in a dumb, retro punk sing-a-long, warm & fuzzy sort of way.

For years and years I only had the North American version of the first album, which has four (I think) fewer tracks on than the UK one - even so, it's still the standout Clash LP.

Does SuperBlackMarketClash count?

it's not a proper album realy - record company expansion of a b-sides/remixes album done for America.

sticking it on now - (fuck Mick kept in a line from the 101ers origanal Lonely Mother's Son on Jail Guitar Doors)

too right,
the clash will always be more than just a punk band,
the pistols were a punk band, and only that (forgetting the whole sid, nancy, johhny, etc, stuff)

actually, talking of the sex pistols, arent they playing 2night? eek!

Bloated middle aged middle class men playing at..

'Combat Rock' for me. Not the fashionable answer but a decent LP. If not 'Super Black Market' Clash which people will say is not a proper lp etc bwtf.

funny I was watching a middle class middle aged man playing punk earlier today:D

so what if joe came from a middle class background, he was a superb musicial talent and did well for himself. jon lydon is a dam hypocrite, slagging off UK for being a nanny state, whilst he lives it up in america.

^ I know - I was taking the piss (that should've been a wink smiley)
the fact The Pistols (what's left of them) are now a 'bunch of middle class, middle aged men' has fuck all to do with how 'punk' or good they now are.

I only have 2. the first one and London's Calling. And the first one is the business.. .. Can't say I've particularly got into London's Calling - overrated as an album.
