Best Chip Shop in Scotland (nominations)

The Anstruther Fish Bar. Often far too busy for relaxed eating in atmosphere, but great for taking away and eating at the sea shore (if you don't mind queueing!)

Spent several holidays as a kid in Crail & this was the nearest chippy. I do remember it being very good though.
Favourite chippy in Glasgow would probably be Elio's in Shawlands.

Oh & forgot The Unique in Calder Street.

A strong, contender has arisen in the Quayside (formerly Hornblowers) Chipper in Gourdon. Despite the change in operators, the new guys have kept things much the same - Absolutely superb fish and a small good quality menu of other products done unusually in lightly spicy/crispy breadcrumbs and superb chips.

Here's the Chicken Fillets I had earlier tonight:

IME, most Scottish chippers stopped selling fags and a lot of other stuff they used to sell back when they revised the licencing/food hygiene laws, defining the types of premisis and what they coud sell from them more strictly.

 That was always one of those English/Scottish cultural difference things.

most of them in Leith still do, good money in it

There's not good money in retailing fags. Most retailers only sell them because the next one does and they fear customers will go there instead and buy their chips (or whatever) there too. (There is a good mark up on food).

The Golden Fry Brora ;)

They've only had one bad review. Probably Sassenachs lost on their way to Whitby ;)

“Disgusting!”

My family and I happened to pass here starving after a hectic weekend. We stopped here hoping on some at least average chippy meals and got a heap of rubbish! My wife and I had fish suppers. The batter was greasy, and sticky and the chips were undercooked and disgusting! I didn't even want my kids to touch theirs - greasy and below average. There was a restaurant and I can't speak for it but sort this place out!

We apologise that you did not enjoy your dinner and we have no idea why it was so bad?? all our batter is home made and our chips are fresh every day.
it was a shame you did not take it back in to us and it would of been changed over straight away, but the next time you are passing bye if I can tempt you and your family in for some food it will be on the house.
once again we are sorry for the inconvenience

Took my mother to the Quayside after her hospital appointment yesterday. Splendid again - She had the lemon sole, which in her opinion was "superb" :)

I had a very good Scotch egg while I was here:

I also had a good fish supper at Mackays of Eyemouth last weekend. Tasty ice cream for afters too!

I can also recommend a trip to Corvi's in Bo'ness. Get there early though, they close at 6:30ish! Lots of folk rave about the 'broon fish' ( battered smoked haddock) however it's a bit strong for my taste. The plain old battered haddock is very good though.

I was quite impressed with Dinnies on the green in Aboyne recently - They opened around Christmas, with an ice cream shop round the side.

On the strength of my first visit they are very good indeed - Fish was great and their steak pies were almost to Nevis Bakery standard! :D
