Best broadband provider?

I've just entered my postcode on this BB comparison site: http://www.top10-broadband.co.uk/, and it's telling me: 'Speed your line supports: up to 3.5Mb'.

If that site is accurate/correct (...-if...), then... -Is that it? Regardless of whether I sign up with a faster package, 3.5Mb would be the top speed I could possibly expect?!:(

Be have been great and actually drop prices from time to time.

Our router arrived two days late
They gave us a free month without us asking

They email us in advance of scheduled downtime and always seem to do it in the early hours of a Sunday morning

Email the day before they take the direct debit

I don't think it takes ADSL2+ into account (the technology that's used for >8Mbps connections) - With my postcode and phone number it says max 6.5Mbps, but I know for a fact that I connect at around 17Mbps. And that doesn't even work out when you compare like with like exchange distance on an ADSL/ADSL2+ comparison graph.

I wouldn't trust it.

This is what's so difficult - half this thread are saying Be is great and here's you saying it's shit :D I don't have cable though and am thinking of getting freesat recorder so that will take that bit out of the equation

We had contention issues, everyone in this area seemed to have Be! Victim of its own success...

So it was fast during the week and very very slow at the weekend, when everyone else was using it too. It was bad enough for us to get annoyed and move to cable. Shame you can't get it, I'd have thought that where you live it would be possible to get it!

Cheers Crispy.

Yes, I'm cautious about the accuracy of those comparison sites. On the plus side, I've heard about Be's magical ADSL2+ gubbins, so yes, maybe that would indeed be something to take into consideration.

I'm only just over a mile from my exchange, so I'd like to hope it's possible to download quicker than a maximum of 3.5Mbps. :hmm: :(

I think in my case though that I might as well switch ISP anyway. For the same amount I'm already paying, and even if I can only get 3.5Mbps, I could probably still double my current d/l speed!... :o :D

At one mile (1600m) line length, you should get the maximum 8Mbps from regular ADSL, and a whopping 20Mbps from ADSL2+ (assuming no other imperfections).

Blimey, even half of that would be an improvement! :D

Well, I'll probably give Be a go, and I guess only time will tell...

:)

Be should give you a reasonable estimate, they are marketed as a high bandwidth supplier so did a reasonable job of signing up people who'd benefit (or at least saying you'd not get much). That was when I joined.

No idea about now.

The actual Be site, even with their promise of magical ADSL2+ gubbins, is telling me that 'We've estimated that your maximum download speed is 4 meg.'

*weeps*

I think there must be 'other imperfections' at play...

:hmm::mad::(

Do you have home extensions?

BT do a face plate for the master socket that can help for 10 quid.

Sorry, I'm not too sure what you mean. :o -This kind of thing?

The phone line initially comes up into the flat through the wall in the hallway, where there's a socket-less faceplate. From that, there's an extension wire running along the skirting board and into the living room, to a faceplate with a socket, which is where I plug my phone/modem in. (-It was like this when I moved in, honest!)

Are you saying that this extension could be a bottle-neck of sorts? If so, is this something I can sort out myself, or will it require an engineer?...

(-Sorry, I'm really derailing this 'Which BB provider?' thread a bit here, aren't I. :o)

It is very difficult to estimate the speed you will get. I have four connections from Be into the same building attached to a draytek 3300. They have different line lengths and different speeds. Some will give me an upload speed of 2.5mb, some only 1mb.

1) The extension cable kills it...never plug a router into an extension cable running off any faceplate...the router and the filter must always be plugged directly, lose the extension cable.
2) It's ideal that you run the router off the first/main faceplate then use a longer ethernet cable or wireless (if the router has wireless from there).
3) You must have ADSL filters on all the sockets, however you can gain more speed if rewire the the second wall socket so that it goes into the telephone part of the ADSL filter on the main socket - that way you don't need a second ADSL filter on the second socket, thus less noise.
