Best break-up songs

In break-up situations, I am unlikely to listen to songs about break-ups per se.

You'd most likely find me listening to 'Streams of Whiskey' by the Pogues.

And then all the rest of of 'Red Roses for Me'.

Stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time
There's something wrong here, there can be no denying
One of us is changing
Or maybe we just stopped trying

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it

It used to be so easy living here with you
You were light and breezy and I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy and I feel like a fool

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died
And I can't hide and I just can't fake it

There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too
Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you

But it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it

I can't believe nobodys put in a vote for "Dry your eyes Mate" - perfectly captures that awful moment when your worst suspicions are realised and its even worse than you imagined it would be.

Also Moby's "At least we tried".

Let's Be Us Again- Lonsestar

Let go- Frou Frou

Such Great Heights- Postal Service

Love is a Battlefield- Pat Benatar

Hole In The Head- Sugababes

Apologise- One Republic :)

'i want you' by elvis costello is fabulously bitter.

for a more upbeat 'it's been a few months now and i'm getting there vibe' i love the small faces 'get yourself together.'

So, say someone was going through something painful, what songs do Urban recommend to calm or excite a troubled soul?

Its a look ahead to the future and how things change with time ... and also a classic fookin tune especially the live 2nd version..

Girls Aloud - "The Show";

"Shoulda known, shoulda cared,
Shoulda hung around the kitchen in my underwear,
Shoulda made me,
T'woulda saved me."

SUFFER

I'm gonna suffer for you no longer
I'm gonna suffer for you no more
I'm gonna write you out of my life
and shut the door

You tried to drive a wedge between me and my friends
You pushed me to the edge time and again
I've been living in your shade since I can't remember when
Now I'm bringing this charade to an end

I'm gonna suffer for you no longer
I'm gonna suffer for you no more
I'm gonna write you out of my life
and shut the door

There was subtlety and skill in your manipulative ways
You chipped away my will so you could make me stay
You soothed me with your voice until I obeyed
but I'm making my own choice from today

You used the tongue of love like a boxer uses fists
You contained me like a glove or a creeping cloak of mist
You guaranteed the stars but there always was a twist
Now I see you as you are - Egotist !

I'm gonna suffer for you no longer
I'm gonna suffer for you no more
I'm gonna write you out of my life
and shut the door

I've got a ticket in my hand and I must be moving on
but I want you to understand that from the moment I am gone
I release and let you go - you owe nothing now to me
I'm not angry anymore - I'm free !

I'm gonna suffer for you no longer
I'm gonna suffer for you no more
I'm gonna write you out of my life
and shut the door

"You don't love me anymore" by criminally ignored Canadian songwriter Lynn Miles

I tried to catch your eye.
You would not turn towards me,
An' I felt something start to die.

You leaned against the counter,
Blew some smoke into the air.
Was it you who used to tell me,
That the trick is not to care?

You don't love me anymore.
An' in your heart, you're out the door.
It's getting harder to ignore,
That you don't love me anymore.
That you don't love me anymore.

It's not that I would crumble,
It's just these long drawn out sad goodbyes.
An' I would rather just start walkin',
Have to hear your alibis.

'Cause you don't love me anymore.
An' in your heart, you're out the door.
It's getting harder to ignore,
That you don't love me anymore.
That you don't love me anymore.

Well, heart, it is a rambler;
Tell me who can understand?
'In love' is like a warm wind,
'Cause you can't hold it in your hand.

You don't love me anymore.
An' in your heart, you're out the door.
It's getting harder to ignore,
That you don't love me anymore.
That you don't love me anymore.

No Air- Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown. (Acapella version)

Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air
Can't live, can't breathe with no air
That's how I feel whenever you ain't there
There's no air, no air
Got me out here in the water so deep
Tell me how you gon' be without me
If you ain't here, I just can't breathe
There's no air, no air

There's nothing quite like getting pissed and shouting along to this with similarly heartbroken friends.

His girlfriend's response is good for a laugh too.

Mr Brightside - The Killers

Or Rapper's Delight by The Sugarhill Gang: "Hotel Motel Holiday inn, If a girl starts messing round, then you take her friend"

(or something to that effect)
