best bands for really heavy doom/death-laden Sabbath style riffs?

I also hear a rumour that acrimony are reforming

nooo waaaaayyy

(waits for nadia to post waaayyy)

I have some Old Man Gloom but don't go for it in a big way. S'all right I suppose.

saw Atavist supporting Khanate.....well worth checking out (from Manchester so George Gonga told me), very very doom heavy but with kinda Isis-esque quiet (well...relatively quiet!) moments

Warhorsey? Sounds like the ticket.

Karma To Burn aren't to be forgotten. Maybe not super-heavy and evil but pretty hypnotic and innovative. With the Sabbath riffs. :D

I see a lot of really heavy music being banded about, and I could join the fray with some european death/black metal I used to be into it a fair amount.

I don't really think that is what you are looking for, if you are actually looking for some absolutely crushing riffs.

Then I would suggest lighter stuff, corrosion of conformity, early Korn, Metallica Ride the Lightening et al, Sepultura. My favorite is either Am I Evil a metallica remake of an older tune, or So Fucking What, also a metallica remake of an older tune. There are some really crushing riffs out there without going to the extremes of Black/Death metal, which I sometimes find to be a little involved to really fulfil the crushing riff motif.

No, they don't. At all.

Seconded. They're nasty tinny neo-thrash for kids who want the lot - Maiden bits, Slayer bits, gothy make-up and pretty-boy worship.

Though they probably play the odd tasty riff in amongst the rest...

Damn I used to play guitar in Plissken, who were very much sabbath type riffs. The websites been taken down long ago but if you hunt round the net, there may be the odd mp3 about.

Candlemass - arguably the first proper 'doom-metal' band.

Have to admit the clean vocals took some getting used to, but it was worth it!
