Besiktas fans

It could be the murder of the two Leeds fans by Turkish fans a few years ago...

They did wipe their arses with the Turkish flag though.

Not to say they deserved to die for it, but there are some things you just don"t do (and live) in Istanbul. That is one of them.

It was in all the news reports at the time.

Went down like this: a bunch of drunken Leeds fans hanging out by the James Joyce Irish pub in Taksim decide to taunt the locals by pretending to wipe their fat arses with the national flag.

This would be a bit of a laugh, or at best a cause of mild annoyance, in other European countries. Not in Turkey.

A few local ultras rush off and buy knives, rush back and use them to the devastating effect for which their countrymen are renowned throughout the world. Exit two fat Yorkshire twits.

So they rush off, buy knives and find two of the same "fat yorkshire twits" who happened to pretend to wipe their arses on the flag?

Still if it was in the media it must be true eh?

Its coming up to the 10th anniversary of these murders and from most accounts Ive heard they were innocent bystanders who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Look, I'm not justifying it, but you heard wrong:

"Reportedly, this, is what happened in Istanbul. A gaggle of Neanderthals masquerading as Leeds fans (whether consciously or not), thought it would be funny to rip a Turkish flag off the wall of a restaurant, pretend to wipe their butts with it and then urinate on it."

"Fuat Akkoyunlu, for Demir, told the court: "In the heart of Istanbul they [the English fans] abused the Turkish flag."

Theres nothing in either report that says the two lads who died were abusing the Turkish flag.

Quote

"When they got word of the flag incident, they attacked the first group of Leeds fans they saw, which happened to include Speight and Loftus. Both were stabbed to death. "

I know Leeds fans who were there having a quiet beer when it all kicked off and they said the two lads were minding their own business. I stand by what I said i.e they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Every country has its thugs. Turkeys no different to England in that score but as usual when thugs kick off its often the innocent who get dragged in and suffer the consequences.

Actually, you're right.

Looking at it again, it is the defence lawyer who claims they were abusing the flag. Obviously he is biased.

All I can say is that the flag-abusing story is the version of events that people here tell and believe. Your mates tell a different story. I don't know which is correct tbh.

Sorry for any offence.
