Berlin: weird and/or interesting suggestions please

there is a super sauna landscape thing/sculpture on the river, will find out the name for you. they also let a heated swimming pool into the river that you can swim in there naked like a swimming pool inside a river -its fantastic. bathing suits not advised to wear into the sauna ;).

we went with a whole birthday crew there last february and my english b/f didn't notice that his willy was hanging out of his bathrobe while he chatted for a lengthy time to two girlfriends of mine. it was hilarious and amazing we would go back there anytime.

also i still love the tacheles the cinema cafe/bar is super for cafe or cocktails. also if you go at dusk/nighttime you will get a chance to see lovely russian hookers on oranien strasse.

also to get a hair cut is a must. lots of very affordable hairdressers there.

Brilliant - thanks! :)

Do you mean the Badeschiff?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2007/dec/13/berlin.top10

I haven't been but want to go!

yep, that is the one i mean - :)

the experience of the badeschiff is certainly unique but if you are after a proper sauna landscape thing (like various different type of saunas like infrared and super hot and and and) then its not the right place because on the badeschiff are "only" 3 different but conventional saunas.

the R thing

Haha! You and me both.

Last January I was in Rotterdam, smoked a fat one, got on the first random tram that came my way, went about 8 miles out into the 'burbs, just to get a feel for them. Hopped off, crossed the tracks, hopped on the first one back into town.

No other reason than pure anthropology-whilst-buzzing. :)

Apologies for bringing this threddy back from the dead but this reminded me of something dear long buried so why not sharing it: many years ago I arrived in Rotterdam for the first time all excited as everyone in Amsterdam/Utrecht been constantly telling me what a ghetto, industrial madness and a shithole in general the place is.. Well, straight away got a double pack of psilocybe mexicana in the nearest smartshop and jumped back train aiming for the ghetto outskirts.. As the coach's neatly textured floor turned liquid I realized I was already in the middle of nowhere, Berkel en Rodenrijs if I'm not mistaken. Well anyway, what a beautiful trip it was entering the night city walking the motorway.. The only living souls I've met was this cop duo, however as the patrol car's flashing lights were on, the only visual clue I could grasp were their blurred faces rotating around me vigourously in the rhythm of light. Somehow I managed to articulate I'm fine and asked which way to the Rotterdam, couldn't decipher their message but off I went anyway feeling blessed by the forward-thinking Dutch police force..

That's how my love story with Rotterdam started out. The very same day I found a squat I could stay for a moment soon losing the count of time while immersing myself deeper and deeper in the generously fucked up underworld of the red light district of Marconiplein as well as exploring the seemingly endless harbour on a "borrowed" bike... It culminated in a 800+ mile winter hitchhiking trip back to Riga doubling as a wake-up call during which I met NY on a lonely hilltop in Kassel and slept in snowy phonebooths.. No doubt some of the best time of my life! ;)

Err yeah, sorry Berlin.. It's your turn.

Cafe Zapata in Tacheles still going strong , friend was there last Thursday evening on my reccomendation.

The wall area around Bernaustrass is well worth seeing (where the boundary was in front of some tenements , and people jumped out of the windows till the Vopos stopped it) - good displays etc , and a rebuild of the death strip church.

Really don't see why peeps are recommending Tacheles, it's been tourist-central for 10 years now.
Last time I went (several years ago) they were charging entrance to the back garden ffs

Tacheles is under huge pressure though, and may not last much longer, the lease is up and it's on an immensely valuable bit of land. 2500 police shut the Liebig 14 squat on Wednesday. I lived just around the corner in Eldenaerstr and amongst other things it was important as a base for organising against neo-nazi activity.

I dont know what your ethnic origin is but if its non aryan Id strongly advise caution in most of East Berlin .

Myself and my lady freind are off there for a dirty weekend in the next few weeks . Id aso recommend " the Clash" in Mehringdamm if you want to see some genuine Berlin punk type dingy squatters bar where they play punk rock music very loudly until the early hours and dont empty the ashtrays . Toilets are amazing , completely third world . One of the birds working behind the bar has more metal hanging out of her face than a bomb victim . She can fight like fuck - hard as nails - but shes very nice .

theyve got some amazing chinese Pagoda type restaurants as well , fucking mad looking .

the park in freidrichshain has some amazing 60s pop art architecture in its restaurant . A leftover from the period where the east were proving they were a lot more trendier and space age than their western neighbours and they built that big tower thing . Havnt seen anything like that anywhere else .
Be warned , other end of the park is full of homosexuals though and they can be quite aggresive sexually if you wander into their end .

Actullly thats weird enough on its own to be worth seeing .

i went just the once , on my own . Some german guy jumped into the pool naked and then proceeded to dry his wang with a towel almost in my face as i lounged on a longing chair . I immediately stoppd lounging and left .

Disgusting .

That's how they roll. An alternative for swimming is the lake with a nice wee beach and bar at Weissensee. I was informed by antifa types that it's used occasionally as a nazi hangout but nothing untoward occurred when I was there.

Just got back from a rather brilliant weekend in Berlin, and the 'weird' highlight was probably the Museum der Dinge in Kreuzberg. It's just a museum of stuff, mostly without labels. Best collection of Star Wars figures i've ever seen, amongst other things.

Old thread i know, and probably not the most weird/interesting suggestions....... but i found the massive nuclear bunker under one of the shopping centres really interesting...... and the berlin wall art gallery

what else did you get up to Stigmata?

Couple of more conventional museums- the Altes Museum was rubbish but the Deutches Historisches Museum round the corner was much better. Went to a really nice cake shop underneath a railway arch on the museum island. Went to an S-Bahn party but I don't think there'll be another one of those for a while because the police were not amused. Ate in a brilliant Tintin-themed waffle restaurant in Kreuzberg.

The airfield at Tempelhof has been turned into a big grassy common, full of families and kite flyers and stuff with this enormous disused Nazi airport terminal looming over everything. That was really nice.

Bump! Any more recc's? Specially summer stuff - looking at going in June.
Also, can anyone offer any views on which art galleries to prioritise? There are so fucking many, I can't work out how to narrow it down much.
Oh and also clubbing - where's good? Preferably the more, erm, 'informal' stuff.
