Benny Hill

It speaks to a very immature time in this country's history when titilation served as a mechanism to bypass sexual awkwardness. Thank goodness we're better now.

If it is sexist, it is sexist against men. The men on Benny Hill are invariably portrayed as lecherous idiots.

anyone over the age 45 would almost certainly be lying if they said they didn`t find him funny at the time , times and context .
Nonsense, I hated all that shite like Benny Hill back in the day, it was tired and dismal stuff from my dad's generation and before. I doubt I was alone on that.

So when you were 10 or 11 you didn`t watch Benny Hill ? Fuck me everyone knew the words to Ernie in my school , I am surprised .

I`m not talking about the 70`s or 80`s when anyone our age would be out partying on Saturday nights but when you had to stay in with your mum n dad and there was a choice of 3 channels and kids didn`t have tv`s in their bedrooms.

I thought it was funny. Sure, it was end of the pier humour, and some of it was a bit desperate, but anyone looking back on slapstick comedy with the scrutinising cynical eyes of the new politically correct age of enlightenment is bound to find it a source of much tuttage.

That said, the excuse of the age doesn't apply to Jim Davidson.

I watched Carry On at Your Convenience the other day and it was surprisingly amusing in a '70s birds wearing hot-pants kinda way. :)

Never really liked Benny Hill though.

I used to like Benny Hill as a kid and I watched this at the weekend with my teenage daughter who thought it was very funny. But the constant stereotyping of women as being little more than sex objects left me very uneasy and I found myself repeatedly having to explain to her that things were very different in the 70s. Thank god we've moved on.

I think a greatly overlooked ingredient in the success of the Benny Hill show was the comedy effect of speeding up the slapstick set pieces by x2.

The Goodies used this too.

The Goodies though, now they were funny.

You can find Kat Kong online, it's still insanely funny.

Does any country in the world still show it regularly on TV?
I can't imagine many (or any) are dim enough to still want to watch this.

Talking to Mrs.Griff about The Goodies the other night and were baffled as to why the BBC never repeats any of them.

They were fucking massive in the '70s with the programme and the songs like 'Funky Gibbon'

Because, not to put too fine a point on it, they were cringe-makingly awful rubbish which only 7 year-olds would enjoy today. Watch them doing "Funky Gibbon" on You Tube, it's insultingly bad. Even in the 70s they appealed only to children and idiots.

What about the giant cat than? :hmm:

I've started a poll on the subject, so we'll see.

They worship him in America, but that's just because he's British and they think he represents the British sense of humor. Then again Americans can't understand why Brits think Jerry Lewis is funny--they think of him as Brits think of Benny Hill.

What you don`t find exploding Christmas puddings funny ? I feel such an idiot .
