Benn for deputy leader, says Dennis Skinner

Here's your starter for ten: "Hypocrisy: amount of approval for actions which the group officially considers immoral or unethical, when done by or for the group, its doctrines or leader(s); willingness to violate the group’s declared principles for political, psychological, social, economic, military, or other gain." source above :)

Anyone remember 'ethical foreign policy'?

Out of interest, especially for anyone's who actually is or was a member, how many of these do you think really apply to nuLabour?
Perhps 3/4 of those do remind me of one aspect or another of new labour.

You are right to point out that many of the criteria may well apply to New Labour but feck me I think quite a few apply to the plethora of organised left groups.

Do they also apply to far right groups? I mean, to those groups in Britain, and to their reality, not to their fantasies.

It seems to me - with scant knowledge of these groups - that their inability to find a charismatic leader since Mosley means that they're not really cults.

So was Benn senior's senior (!). John Benn - Tony Benn's grandfather, Hilary Benn's great grandfather, was Liberal MP for Devonport 1904-1910 and was leader of the Progressive Party on London County Council until 1922.

William Benn, his son, Tony Benn's father, was first a Liberal MP but resigned from the party and from parliament in 1927, then elected as a Labour MP for a different seat in 1928.

Fer chrissake, don't tell him about the Labour Representation Committee.:D

you try to stop a thread being derailed by Margaret Rutherford's legion of fans, and look what happens :(

I think that Hilarys dad and Margaret come across as quite similar bumbling along in a well intentioned way..Getting lots of things wrong but lots quite right.

I notice Skinner voted with the government against having an inquiry into the Iraq War.

And voted for:
"That this House, recognising that there have already been four separate independent committees of inquiry into military action in Iraq and recognising the importance of learning all possible lessons from military action in Iraq and its aftermath, declines at this time, whilst the whole effort of the Government and the armed forces is directed towards improving the condition of Iraq, to make a proposal for a further inquiry which would divert attention from this vital task."

Skinner's just retained as court jester to New Labour these days. They find it useful to have a trophy "dinosaur" around the place - but he won't bite the hand that feeds him.
