Belarus v England

easily.

hes shit.

No no teaboy, world class is ranked more highly then class. But resrved for very very few players.

dave

Don't get me wrong, I am not in the CFilter school of probably one, who thinks Heskey is World class - far from it.

He's getting plaudits all over the shop... Capello's most consistent player. That's Capello. C-A-P-E-L-L-O. You might have heard of him, he's pretty good at judging players with talent.

;)

Capello is over-rated.

Not a patch on Rafa - not even in Houllier's league. Mind you, Houllier signed a certain Heskey for £11m.....;)

I can remember his Roma side came to Liverpool in the Houllier days - they got dicked 2-0 and sent packing.

Heskey is a pile of shit. However he seems to make wayne rooney shine so i will let him off for now.

he's still shit though.

strikers that can't score are shit no matter what else they do for the team.

But heky/rooney with defoe coming off the becnh looks like it will work.

dave

Bullshit, Dave. You only have to look at England's performances in the early years of Sven's rule, when we did reasonably well (and I think we would have beaten Portugal in that Euro 2004 quarter final, even with Rooney injured, if Sven had brought Heskey on instead of Vassell, as Heskey would have held the ball up in the portugal end), and after that, and during the Mclaren years (except when Mclaren recalled him and mysteriously we won two games 3-0), to see that he is actually a really really vital player to our side.

Yeah like i said he makes rooney shine so i will let him off for now.

However, a strikers principle job in life is to score goals. Something heskey can't do at all well.

It would be a like a class defender who can't mark or a brillient goal keeper who can't catch propely(yes im looking at you rob green but not calling you shit)

and your danm right my own opinion matters more to me then ayone elses. If i didn't think i was right i would change my opinion.

I love you to chris.

dave

Rubbish, it's a false comparison. Strikers are all about who they play alongside. If Heskey playing alongside either Owen or Rooney causes either of those players to score way more than they otherwise would, then play him.

Using your rationale, Peter Beardsley was shit too. He wasn't - he didn't score many, he just helped Lineker to score loads. Ditto Quinn and Phillips at Sunderland back when they were goodish.

I tend to go with extremes for players either they are class or shit.

I do howver think carlton cole is a remarkably similer player to heskey, heskey has the speed cole can kinda sorta finish maybe possibly sometimes.

Oh and just so we are clear even if heskey won world player of the year he would still be shit,(never happen though so im safe) if only to piss chris off.

dave

We've had years of square pegs in round holes, playing stupid 4-5-1 formations and stuff so that we can fit gerrard, lampard, joe cole, hargreaves and beckham in the same midfield (thus leaving rooney isolated) etc.

We don't need that any more.

We need a team. Teams win games in this sport, and rarely 'class players'.

Heskey is brilliant at what he does. Hes(the)key to England doing well up front.

Heskey + Owen = goals
Heskey + Rooney = goals

The figures speak for themselves. Just like Capello's track record of winning tournaments.

Exactly. With Heskey in the side, the ball remains in posession up front for far, far longer than without him. Strikers need space created, chances layed off and defenders taken out of the game. It's not just 'cos he's big; he's a genuinely excellent player and this is obvious to anyone who's actually gone to see a game in which he's played (and played well, he is succeptable to bad weeks in the office). Houllier, O'Neill, Eriksson, Capella all love him (though Houllier damaged his career immeasurably) and they know what they're talking about.

With him in the side, England score loads of goals. Without him in the side, England don't. This doesn't happen for someone that's 'shit' or 'just a big lump'. Don't forget how tall he is, it's difficult to look fluid and grateful when you're that size... he'll out run most defenders over 10yrds, that's for sure. He competed for England in the 100m as a kid.

This probably seems over the top, but it's been 12 years of having to defend him when dealing with people who only know to judge a forward on goals scored. It's a blessed relief that the football supporting population are finally coming round to the idea!
