When I was 13 or 14, there was only two kids in our entire school with psychobilly haircuts. Me and a kid called Bernard. That haircut coincided with the beginning of my academic nosedive... :o

I've got some old pictures somewhere of me with some huuuuge quiffs.

Thankfully, I know not where they currently are, nor do I possess a scanner. :D

I'm trying to remember the name of a psychobilly compilation that came out in about 1985. Cartoon skeletons with quiffs, maybe incorporated into a book cover, all on a lurid yellow and pink background.

I think it had a mixture of (then) current psychobilly bands and probably original 50/60s tracks that The Cramps had covered.

Anybody help me out?

Rockabilly psychosis and the garage disease

Stompin' At the Klub Foot? there were loads of those

No, there were live ones, weren't they? This was studio recordings, AFAIR.

'Twas a pretty good comp at the time though, I think.

I think I went from that sort of thing to The Cramps and The Fuzztones to yer genuine Nuggets (-well, tapes of) and a life-long love of garage.

weatherall plays a fair bit of rockabilly these days so i've heard...
been thinking of getting a pair of brothel creepers for a while now (just thinkin mind). make a change from the white trainers. and then getting into dubstepabilly - quarter speed rock and roll with calypso samples over the top.

I was a teenage psychobilly (and beyond), Rockabilly Psychosis and the Garage Disease is indeed a top album, as were the 4 Stompin at the Klub Foot compilations.

You should have a listen to some Guana Batz (prob my favs), Meteors (mad mad following), Restless (more straight-up rockabilly), Long Tall Texans (trio who rocked), King Kurt (messy group and good fun), Tall Boys (2 of the original Meteors), Demented Are Go (they were a real scream live and more than lived up to their name), Cramps (of course), gawd there's loads of em.

Its a shame but I had to flog about 60 of my pyscho albums a few years back due to financial problems and the guy buying asked me did I really want to sell them cos they would be effectively irreplaceable. I've managed to replace some of them but at a greatly inflated price :(

Has the revival begun again? I'm trying to grow a quiff so this could be the time :)

Vince Ray does some great stuff ( done a Demented sleave ).

Plus loads of others if you do a google images.

Recently 'The Legendary Shack Shakers ' are the new equivalent of a rocking/country/punk mish mash:)

While the 'Nekromantics' are more like an original psychobilly band.

Here's an early Demented pic

Where's the jealousy smiley?

HAve you heard their live album? - sounds a hoot!

haven't heard the live one, got the rest.

it's this festival in Newcastle - all free. lots of indie acts but on one stage, in a row, there's Legendary Shack Shakers, Holly Golightly, Hayseed Dixie and the Handsome Family, and then time to scurry over and see the Go Team and Richard Hawley :)

I had a greasy quiff when I was at school. And a red Harrington jacket and DMs

It's time for a psychobilly revival :)

Demented Are Go

just been downloading some of their stuff - i like it

but then i just read a bit about them on wikipedia - they did a collaboration with ian stewart anderson?! that's put me right off. :(

there was a psychobilly in my home town who hung out with the BNP skins.

<shaves quiff off>

Yeah, I have to admit, I've seen quite a few dodgy characters at some gigs, nasty tattoos and all sorts.

Still, some of the music is excellent. Those three US bands, Nekromantix, Rezurex and Tiger Army are all cracking.

Well, i never knew that - what a bunch of cunts.

There was always a slight cross-over between psychobillys, skinheads and scooter boys (my personal nemesis), so inevitably, there would be a couple of dodgier types around but psychobilly music was never politically driven really - there was a group called the Coffin Nails from Reading who had some nasty songs but I always thought they were the exception rather then the rule tbh.

I assumed the co-existence of the above factions was more a homo-erotic-coming-together e.g. lots of young men taking their shirts off and then rubbing up against each other to the music, just like Trade - there were lots of rumours about the Kattle/Wrecking Crew (who followed the Meteors) swinging every which way.

Really sad to hear about the Stuart-connection of DAG tho:(

I think that might have been a misunderstanding as I've heard that before and it was a band called the Klansmen but didn't have anything to do with the Demented ( I'll look it up later ).
P.S. Wikipedia said they formed in England - wrong and the early history it gives is also wrong ( I saw their first gig ! )

Must admit i didn't read the Wiki entry and everyone knows how random they can be  DAG were Welsh IIRC, I knew someone who vaguely knew their original double bass player and he certainly didn't come across as a KKK-man but who really knows?

Fingers crossed it ain't so, glancing nervously at newly grown'n'combed quiff

Just spent two months in California, and all the pub bands are PB (I think)
Fucking superb, punk music to dance too, with real pigfuckers on banjo's wearing dungaress.

Street gang were the best, I'll try and find a link.

Don't do the boogie-woogie, don't do the bop,
Don't do the stroll, don't do the hop,
Shake your head, stamp your feet,
Come on baby, do the frenzy beat.....
