They've got some catchy tunes and some cheesy naffness too. Not worth getting worked up about either way really. McCartney is a cunt.

They are ok though never been that much of a fan....compared to some of the post-ironic hoxton hoedown sh*t el jefe has linked to recently they are f*cking amazing:)

Thou shalt not put musicians and recording artists on ridiculous pedestals no matter how great they are or were.
The Beatles... Were just a band.

A healthy attitude.

There was apparently a period in the 70s where they weren't that fashionable and where the 1960s style hysteria died down - and the Beatles preferred it.

I read that a McCartney interview that in the 70s he sometimes used to commute from his Sussex farm by train to Charing Cross and walk to his Soho office or Oxford Street recording studio without being unduly bothered by people

Once John died, the hysteria started up again and the brief period of being able to lead a normal life ended.

Another vote for amazing here.

I still listen to them a fair bit, going for the psychedelic-era stuff more than the others. I think 'Tomorrow Never Knows' is my favourite song of theirs - I thought that was fucking incredible the first time I heard it in the 1980's - God alone knows what it must have sounded like in 1966 or whenever it was released.

When they're bad, they're really bad, mind. Fortunately for every 'When I'm 64' there's a 'Day in The Life' to counteract it.

I know someone who genuinely feels sick at the sound of them, starts dry heaving. :D
I don't quite get that- how does 'Twist and Shout' sound anything like 'I am the walrus', or indeed 'Blackbird'? or 'The Inner Light'? They're all very different to each other. Perhaps your friend is simply an emetophile ;)

For me, echoing NVP, I'd say they were patchy- they've produced some of my favourite songs (tommorrow never knows) and some of my least favourite (when I'm 64). The second side of Abbey Road still sounds amazing. Most of Let it Be is utter bobbins.

However, I do understand what my mate was saying when he told me why he couldn't listen to the Beatles. The reason- "Paul McCartney"

What a fucking ridiculous poll this is. 'Are the beatles any good?' ? WTF! Even if you dont like their music their ability or influence cannot be questioned. Understand im not a beatles fanatic. But as a previous poster said they rewrote the rules of modern music.

their ability or influence cannot be questioned.

their ability can certainly be questioned. They weren't particularly good musicians, and it's not even that they're renowned for. As for their influence, it's not all necessarily positive.

They didn't re-write the rules of modern music . Thats fucking bollocks .

But when did being a great musician lead to making great music? When people get too good at their respective instruments you end up with shit like Tower of Power.
Give me Pavement anyday.

I will concede that they did spawn the likes of Phil Collins and Oasis, but you can't blame them for that

One of the music mags this month (Word?) ran a large feature about the changes the Beatles brought about, and their influence on later artists. I didn't agree with a lot of it, but there's no denying that they remain one of the most important bands in pop culture.

Doesn't mean you have to like them, of course.
