BBC4 tonight:Do it Yourself: The Story of Rough Trade

I don't remember Priestley's as anything other than a clothes shop on Bootham, so it was a record shop before then was it? Before my time clearly ;)

I just remember the guy who ran it always looked pretty cool, clothes wise. The tiling on the outside of the building is really nice you're right.

Priestley's vintage clothing shop used to occupy these premises near the top of Bootham. Though Priestley's relocated long ago to new premises, these rather handsome tiles remain on the front of its former shop. I used to love this place, and visited often in the 1980s (when I was still at school and so didn't have the money to buy the suede jackets I coveted).

York is a bit of a clone town now in terms of shops. :(

Maybe a bit but where isn't in terms of town centre shops? York's still a much more interesting place to visit than the majority of cities in England if not the UK. Tourism obviously brings a helluva lot of money to the place but the amount of people clogging the streets in York esp. during the summer months can be infuriating.

Though it was sad that some of the bands RT helped launched fucked off to the majors once they had a little bit of success, also unlike most of the interviewees,Green Gartside seems to be aging quite well.
