BBC4 Prog Rock tonight

Gingerman

Is a great bunch of lads.....
21:00 Prog At The BBC,Archive footage of '70s prog rock bands
22:00 Prog Rock Britannia,a look back at the era of the concept album.

cool.

mind you in that timeframe they will only be able to fit in 4 or at a push 5 songs

you certainly got vfm on the legnth of the songs from your average prog band

They were trailing this on BBC Breakfast this morning, although the clip they played look like it was from German TV archives, rather than the Beeb's.

Yup, German TV recorded a lot of footage of prog bands from that era. There were really no equivalent shows here.

I must admit, whilst programmes like "Old Grey Whistle Test" had a certain utilitarian atmosphere they can look a bit grim now, whilst some of the continental programmes of the same period really went to town with the funky chromakey background sets.

This clip of King Crimson is a nice example, too.

As I bought my partner nine King Crimson albums for Christmas (at his request) it was never not going to be switched on in our house. :o:o

5 minutes to go O proggy boys & girls.....

thank god for iplayer.

and prog.

proper music, uninhibited or concerned with commercialism or spitting.

all progged out - two and half hours of it

I'm really going to have to track down some King Krimson to listen to...

I was disappointed there was no Van der Graaf Generator

We were puzzled there was no Pink Floyd.

Can't get over how the bloke in Family bleated rather than sang , or how much better Ian Anderson looks than he did 40 years ago....

Or that King Crimson were still going, & were rather good, in 1982.....

Yet another great music programme from BBC4.

Now that's true love! ;)

There's a song in there somewhere...

......On the ninth day of Christmas,
my true love sent to me
Nine King Crimson albums,
Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
Five golden rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.

There was plenty more thay could have said - This seemed to fit/concentrate on a particular strand of prog IMO. I'm also surprised there was no mention of Joe Meek & the artists (other than Steve Howe)/technical approaches that were derived from his studio & shaped prog in equal measure.

Crimson in 82 were a reformation. They had been inactive for some years.

Atomic Rooster !!! Brilliant memories !! Now 'Yours is no Disgrace' by Yes whats not to like ?

@pogo and others... From the part I saw, I think they were focussing on the more ridiculuous stuff.

I loved the pisstaking about obscure time signatures and of course...
"The search for the lost chord" :D

Yes, the "whimsical" side of prog did seem to have the upper hand. Which is not really what does it for me - although it was interesting to see some of the footage.

What a great show. I'd forgotten that Keith Emerson was actually an exciting live performer before he progged and pomped to the max.

Yep. I love the beeb for this kind of thing. No commercial broadcaster would show stuff like that, never mind spend the money to make it.
to be fair, all the footage was sourced from elsewhere, even if only from the Whistle Test.

Better than nothing, but still.

Was hoping they could have persuaded Fripp to comment :D

Ian Anderson looks much better now than when he was younger,Bill Bruford's ageing pretty well,Yes in the '80s  anyway not a fan of prog but enjoyed the last nights telly immensley, though they woulda gotten Bill Baily to narrerate the docu instead of Neil from the Young Ones :D,surprised no interview with Fripp.

The only thing I remember about Emerson, Lake and Palmer was Fanfair for the Common Man, cos it was a massive hit. It wasn't mentioned.

I thought that the three forty foot container lorries flagged Emerson, Lake and Palmer were cool though. Matched the spirit of pompous prog rock somehow.

I can just imagine these lorries running over small hedgehogs.
