BBC: "radical website Urban75"

Given that U75 has a sizeable minority of posters who subscribe to some form of anarchist politics it is most certainly radical compared to most other message boards.

Where did this 'Radical' tag actually come from? I've been round a wee while now and I can't say ive noticed anything approaching 'Radical' (except maybe for Butchersapron telling someone or other to put his head in the oven because he was a manager - that was kinda 'Extreme').

A long time ago, in a forum far far away there lived a people known as The Anarchists.

Urban75 was a green and pleasant country then, the daily sport of hunting the lesser brained Trot being the only occurrence to spoil the peace.

Then darkness fell across the lands, a mighty insurrection was formed, the people (ie a few middle class uni anarchos) had had enough of the evil dictator Darth Editor. They banded together and launched the Rebel Alliance to fight his scourge.

Using the trusty sword of Consensus Decision Making and the faithful shield of Moderation Powers For All they launched forth and created a new domain...the war continued but this time it was amongst themselves...time passed and Urban75 radical beginnings gave way to in the closest Tories like Keyboardjockey and Jeremy Clarkson love ins began...

Today Urban75 is a different place from those torrential days....etc

middle class uni anarchos:rolleyes:, fucks sake .

Hi Frosty, returnee?

Imo, when Urban started it was the height of er, fashion, and echoed, led? the zeitgeist: the yellow dayglo jackets, combat pants, techno, road protests, anti-capitalism, they now seem a long way off in this era of designer/culture and conspicuous consumption, (I bet even the hardiest female activist/ex activist has got one of those handbags), though there are a fair few urbanites still clinging on to their youth or even twenties and thirties....

tbh, i wouldn't be surprised if Peter York , or at least his minions used to monitor this site for picking up trends, etc.

Calling all anarchos middle class students is a useful way of dismissing their arguments without actually having to resort to facts or debating skills

It is. Commonly used by people who use knee-jerk and "common sense" rather than rational thought processes and tend not to actually have any argument whatsoever.

This is not opinion, it's fact.

Heh you must be a returnee to take such offence. It is a lazy characterisation but then it being a stupid piss take it isn't meant to be 100% accurate. That said a number of the @'s back then were middle class and at university...

Ay, but of course, if those middle class kids weren't anarchos, people like Frosty would have called them bourgiouse careerist wankers (from the left) or mates (from the right). They cannae win. That's one of the reasons why it's a shit argument. that and the fact that anarchism is as broad a church as any other political spectrum.

Well it seemed to me that some were playing anarcho waiting to grow up and become something else so the point is valid imo. But anyway...it's all said and done now.

makes I laff when it's applied to some of the anarchists off these boards who I've met too :)

It refers to my trousers.

I never really thought of it as being anything, really. It just is. And was. And carries on that way.

If you, err, get my drift.

I think it had a little bit of radicalness. I remember seeing the 'Anarchist Bookfair' threads, thinking it was some sort of droll joke: but it wasn't.:)

Or the threads where the trotskyites would argue with whomever it is that they argue with. I heard more abstruse bolshevik bushwa here than I ever thought existed.

Maybe that sort of thing is radical.

Plus, there's the drug talk, nonjudgemental. That must seem pretty radical to a certain segment of the population, ie most people.

You have to read my posts, I'm afraid...:D:p:D

I think a very long time ago, in a universe far far away etc.... Urban was 'radical' principally in a counter-cultural sort of way, which went along with vague political convictions. I don't think this element has gone away, it's just been watered down a bit which is inevitable given the site's increasing popularity.

However I also think that c.2002 the site did become a bit more politically stimulated. There was a time when the UK politics forum and the world politics forum was a bit more active. Whether that was valuable 'radical' debate or just people winding each other up is another question altogether.

And then the great urban schism happened and that newer political element hived itself if, so now we are left with an urban that closer reflects whatever may have been 'radical' about it, say, 8-10 years ago. Which is to say 'radicalism' in lifestyle rather than politics (culture, drugs, parties, community news etc...).

I think that Urban75 is a real mixture of things...But a lot of people on urban seem more like moderate conservatives...They dont really like the idea of poverty and massive inequality... but......

... there are lots of pictures of longcat.
