No. 2 to me looks like one of those standard pictures that Jessops' use to advertise. You know, the kind that says 'wow isn't photography great, you can use it to capture these wonderful happy exotic colourful people pictures when you go on a travel holiday'. It's an alright picture but definitely not a contender for any PoY IMO.
I don't even know how no. 12 got this far. Or why it even exists in any photo competition.
The current leader, no.11, is a nice almost dreamlike photo with nice colour but I don't think it's very strong nor moving and I don't think it belongs in the comp.
No. 1 is good, but I would say that as I'm a sucker for sunset backlit people silhouette pics. More of a "photograph of the summer" comp winner than photograph of the year.
3. is good also, I like the lighting and the composition. Actually I think it's really really good. but I don't think it holds enough relevance to be a PoY contender.
No. 8 you have got to be joking.
I really like number 10, it's a brilliant travel picture. It strikes me as quite unusual. I love the two ladies on the right. It says something about culture, tradition and technology but I don't think it says enough about today for it to be considered a photo of the year...
No.6 is "funny as fuck photo comp" winner

made me laugh. photo of the year though, no.
No.9... hmmm, nice colour, nice sharpness, nice legs. But it isn't saying anything to me.
No.5 is 'agricultural photo of the month' maybe, but not strong enough or interesting enough for this title.
I like the idea of number 7 but the composition lets it down. It gives very little idea of where it is, and for me it gives no feeling of the environment, no sense of the surrounding location if you know what I mean.
I really like number 4. I'm biased towards this sort of picture but I think it's really strong. Impoverished area, four children sharing something. Kinda gives me the feeling of hope, the bond between friends, the innocents' journey through a harsh and cruel life. The composition is really good IMO. The light, the depth of field, the subject matter, everything about it I like. This is PoY IMO.
Each to his own though, like.
