Someone from southmead has written a good piece here on the program , its a useful and thoughtful bit of writing. He compares the way people talk about 'sink estates' and the problems they have with some other areas of bristol which arguably are worse. Its here:

Worth a read, but why do you say the above?

I think most people on this thread have agreed that Southmead is in no way unique.

Plymouth has Devonport, Swilley
Bath has the Fox Hill estate
Southampton has Thornhill and Millbrook
etc etc etc.

Something very weird is going on in British society where the favoured, so-called progressive societal model is presumed to be the middle class one. People are clambering to get on board or clinging to stay on board. The article from John Serpico' is excellent, i've also noticed this constant denigration of people on the big estates by much of the middle class, inc when i was active, by activists, etc, though not too many leftists. I suspect it has made the Govt's welfare reform programme go through a bit easier as well.

Thing is, it's difficult/ not as 'entertaining' to make a documentary about MC racism. People muttering to each other about funny smells coming from next door and making thinly veiled dog-whistle comments over the dinner table doesn't make as good TV as 11 year olds throwing bottles at people.

Seriously horrible program but i wonder how a White "Christian" family might do in Northern Pakistan, or Saudi Arabia or Somalia. I think the program was set up for predictable results.

Why did you choose Northern Pakistan for your example? Northern Pakistan is mostly Ismaeli Muslims (But you knew that of course, yeah?) Fairly wealthy, educated and very decent people. I spent a little bit of time in Gilgit and Hunza . There were a few westerners living there teaching English. They were treated wonderfully, as was I.

Perhaps you were talking about north West Pakistan, Peshawar etc. Home to the Pashtun and Baluch people. Some of the most hospitable people in the world?
Or perhaps you are a thick ignorant moron who needs to look at a map?

I can tell you this for a fact. Nowhere in Northern or NWFP Pakistan would people be treated in the disgusting manner that the people in Panorama were treated.

Devonport and Swilly (officially known as North Prospect for those unfamiliar with Plymouth) really should be nuked though, to be absolutely honest. North Prospect was once so foul that even the police officers went in there only in pairs.
