seems to be particularly contentious at the moment, so let's vote.

There's too many different models to really get stuck into that, i think, so a broader poll will have to do..

My feelings on the matter are no secret.

IPods do look very nice, but that's the only thing they have on Creative. Everything else is noticably superior on a Creative player.

that poll's shit!
forgot to allow 'other' and 'use my phone'. so please wait if you want to vote for those.
I fixed it for you, jellybrain :)

My post from the thread which inspired this one:

Funnily enough, having been historically hard on iPod (I had an awesome iRiver H120 which I loved.....then I left the fucker on the plane. ) I am now the (reasonably) proud owner of both an iPod Nano and a G5 80gb video iPod as well.

I have to say, that most my reasons for not buying into iPod have pretty much been resolved.

My new one sounds great (So much of this is in the earphones anyway - my E3C's are spot-on), the battery life is much improved and I never used OGG or FLAC anyway.

I do miss the optical in/out but I can live with it.

As for - as Dub mentioned - being forced to use iTunes......well it's no longer a contentious issue for me, as I bought a Mac mini last year to hook up to the TV and surround sound system in the lounge (amongst other things) and very nice it is too.

Of course, as I had all this MP3 music on my shitty old PC, I ended up importing it to iTunes so I could use that and front row to play stuff in the lounge.

Once I had already stepped down that path and was using iTunes anyway, it then made more sense to buy the iPod(s)!

I have been Appled by stealth.

:(

So yeah - personally I would still choose to have not lost my old iRiver over most the things available today, but that isn't really an option!

I had upgraded it myself to a custom firmware, a 30 hour plus battery, and a 40Gb HD and there was still room to customise it further.

That said, IMO iRiver's current range of HD players are pretty turd - though the solid state seem fine.

If I hadn't have already been using iTunes anyway, then I too would probably have bought a Creative.....in fact I was looking at one of the video ones before I bought my iPod but the fucking things didn't work on Mac's!

Horses for courses innit - but I guess it is a while since we had an iPod vs everything else bunfight!

:D

Oh - and are we voting on what we own (in which case I will vote) or are we merely choosing sides in a fanboy war......in which case I won't bother.

:)

There's nothing really special about the ipod itself - everyone else has knicked the interface these days. But the integration with itunes, and itunes itself are what puts it above the rest, IMO.

If contentious is you posting on every Ipod thread that they're fucking shit then.. erm.. ok ;)

but iTunes is the main reason i hate the iPod - it's a disgusting interface. It's unwieldy, intrusive, clunky and irritating.

ugh

personally i hate i tunes too

but i'll admit the stuff the creative comes with isn't that much better

but you feel less like your hand is being forced

I have learned to like it.....

Certainly got easier for me to keep track of stuff and organise it over the windows folder system I was using - especially as the collection got bigger!

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it is perfect but it suits my needs these days.

I also get the impression (I say impression as I have never used it on a PC) that iTunes is more reliable, user friendly and better integrated when running on a Mac.

I've just got an ipod nano after my creative one gave up the ghost, not had a chance to play with it yet. I just got sick of the headphone jack breaking(it's happened on my last two). I reckon I can cut down the amount of music I carry around to 8gb, so I won't have to lug a brick around all summer. I use itunes anyway..

In an MP3 player I want:

voice recording
decent sound quality
FM radio (not really that much though)
USB mass-storage support (so I don't need to use any special drivers/software)
OGG support
some sort of lossless support
minimum 30Gb
at least 8 hours battery life
USB OTG support

Ended up going for the iAudio x5. Happy with it so far!

iPod, simple to use and good for those that don't need anything other than music on their device and still, imo, the best looking MP3 player on the market (although I agree iTunes is crap really). I've yet to pick up another MP3 that's instantly as intuitive as it on first use...:)

That's pretty much it for me. As an intuitive music player the ipod's unsurpassed, but if you want added functionality it may be better to look elsewhere. There's not enough between the brands now to realistically call either of them crap without coming across as a little unbalanced yourself.

Apple's Itunes is apparently crapper on pcs and is a tricky if you've a large, already formatted library, but for most folks it just works seamlessly. I've head plenty of bad things about Creative's software too, even from our office ubergeek. Didn't Dub have an installation problem with Creative too?

It's beautiful, and I bet I could find a track or assemble a playlist faster than you could with files'n'folders :)
