Barcelona Attack 17-08-17

I don't get the mentality of it myself, but I don't think it is necessarily voyeuristic, or motivation by selfishness and greed. At least I'd like to think not.

Sorry I disagree.

There was a incident a year or so near where I live where some guy ended up on a roof. The emergency services were on scene and the usual conversations were happening. The guy was up there for hours, all the time there were about 20 people with their camera phones just filming it, documenting someone's abject desperation and misery all the time knowing (hoping?) he might jump. Vultures the lot em.

Listening to Cadena Ser radio, they are saying that emergency services say that there are 13 confirmed deaths so far. Grim.

Bit close to home for me, my son was there only the day before yesterday.

And from the terrorists point of view the Ramblas is perfect, massive crowds of pedestrians and for quite a lot of it roads on either side giving good access.

I hope there are not too many casualties.

Yeh you could do. But not everyone's like that in tricky situations. We don't know anything of the videoer's feelings or whatnot so prescribing what they should have done or not done seems more to do with our feelings than anyone else's.

I guess so, I just can't envisage myself standing videoing people and then uploading it rather than helping.

Spanish TV being absolutely useless, that much I can tell you.
The problem is it is a fast moving situation with conflicting "news", for example the two armed men seen running into a bar in the market are reported as being involved with the van, while other reports are saying the two men were armed security from the market.

Maybe you are right, I don't know. Although the situations are different. And I really don't want to predict how sensibly I would act if I found myself in the aftermath of a terror attack.

It might be that for some people it allows them to distance themselves from the events, like a sort of emotional sheild.

How fruitful a discussion it is on this thread, I'm not sure either.

Según fuentes policiales, los Mossos han encontrado una segunda furgoneta en Vic ( a unos 70 kilómetros de Barcelona)According to police sources, the Mossos have found a second van in Vic (about 70 km from Barcelona)

Horrific. Confirmed deaths now, Gawd. :(

Def looks like Islamist types eh, not anti-tourist types obvs! ISIS etc have been making noises online about targeting Spain and tourist hotspots for a while now, and I can imagine Spanish intelligence has been busy. Been various jihadi arrests this year in Mallorca, Catalunuya and Andalucia afaik. And returning scum from Syria too who have "turned over a new leaf".

Spanish media fairly shit as usual, no surprise. Will post up/translate anything decent I find tho.

I recall reading how in the UK the police went about erecting defences to vehicles, posts and things when the terrorist threat was high. I know some of them were taken down later but I bet Catalonia is kicking itself for the design of the Ramblas if it permitted a van to gain access to the pedestrian area in the first place.

The pedestrian area is besides the road(s).

Yes I know, but IIRC for most of the way the pedestrian walkway is higher than the road so it could be difficult to get a vehicle up onto the pedestrian way there. But the BBC, above, seems to suggest the van gained entry near the top of the Ramblas and then just drove all the way down.

One man, Driss Oukabir, detained. I think with the Vic van. I don't think it could have been involved in the Barna attack, it's quite far away.

ETA named but not detained.

So one van found in Barna, another in Vic. One man in a Turkish restaurant, negotiating with police.. Not sure about hostages.

I am quite ignorant about Spanish foreign policy, are they oppressing anyone at the moment? or put another way, why is Catalonia a target for terrorists?
