Why should smokers have extra breaks? Over an average day how many extra breaks does a smoker have? 40 mins?

Times that over a 5 day week in a 4 week month and thats 13+ hours a month!

Depending on your job you need someone to cover for you while you are having a smoke, why should a non-smoker pick up the tab for a smokers extra breaks?

I agree that they shouldn't have extra breaks, but, depending on the job, it doesn't always work out as extra. If it's a job where you're not actually working unless you're at your, er, work-centre, for lack of a better word (bar, desk, counter, etc) then both smokers and non-smokers should have the same amount of breaks; non-smokers usually do well out of this deal.

If it's a desk-based job where you can be sitting at your desk and not working (messing around online or whatever), then smokers are only having extra breaks if everybody else actually works every single minute they're at their desk. Which isn't usually the case. Non-smokers should still be allowed to step outside for a few minutes every couple of hours.

It is possible to allow smokers to have smoke breaks without it being unfair on the non-smokers.

(Though if the boss smokes and ends up chatting with the smokers on their breaks, and you see the promotions going all the way of the smokers, then that's unfair).

Lets assume that each break takes 10 minutes, and that you average 11 breaks, thats 110 minutes break a day. That's 550 minutes a week. That's 9 hours 10 minutes a week. That is more than the standard working day. If you multiply this by the number of smokers in your work place you can calculate what this lost time is costing your employer.

If you don't smoke, think about the amount of extra work you need to do to cover for your smoking workmates.

Of course you can also calculate how much time is lost through extra, unofficial, breaks non-smokers take too.

It's all lost productivity, lost profits, lost benefit to shareholders.

The solution is no breaks for anyone!

What about sitting at a PC all day. I have a 5 min break every hour.
