BANGING Sushi cake...NOW WITH PICS!

DSC00482.jpg

Here are a couple more. I did about four each of the salmon, tuna and octopus (which got progressively better and less cartoony but by that point my phone died - it took 13 hours all in all ). I had some left over cake and icing so did some omlette ones too, but they were a bit boring because they didn't require tricky colour blending.
Apart from one big awkward dumb one, we didn't bother with california rolls because they were difficult and didn't look that good.

OMG That is amazing! I can see the smaller ones too in the side of the pics! Fucking brilliant!:D

Oh yeah, you can see the busted looking california roll and also some white chocolate rice crispy cakes with homemade gummy on top. Those were okay but I preferred the little iced ones.

Anyone else trying it could use strips of candied angelica painted with black food colouring for the nori ...

They're brilliant Enid! I can't believe the effort that's gone into them!

I trust they will be submitted to pimpmysnack?

No, they're an urban exclusive.

Fuck! I bought angelica and forgot to use it. Would painting it with black food colouring have worked? Because the fruit leather was a pain in the arse to be honest.

They're jellies? i thought they were cherries, they look fantastic! As do the cakes!

Yeah, it's orange jelly and red food colouring made with half the water you'd usually use (so they weren't too wet) moulded in a plastic quail egg box. The quail egg box was a last minute stroke of genius - we were seriously panicking about what we were going to use. We were considering my polystyrene mac packaging wrapped in foil, or even spending all our money on kinder eggs. Glace cherries would have been good though.

The homemade gummy tuna on the rice krispie cakes was strawberry and orange jelly made with half the water and extra gelatin. I don't know if that how you're meant to make gummy, but it worked.

I want to try dyeing angelica now. We tried painting black food colouring onto rice paper (it dissolved) and onto royal icing (it didn't dry).
I wouldn't advise doing fruit leather in the oven, because trying to peel it off of the baking paper took so flipping long. Next time I do this (there will definitely be a next time) I'll dry it in an airing cupboard for a few days and line a tray with clingfilm.

They're so fabulously brilliant I think they deserve wider recognition. Can I put some pics on my blog?

I'd be honoured! We used a Nigella recipe for the chocolate cake and cream cheese icing. I don't think my mate will be awake yet but when she is I'll get her to tell me exactly what cake it was if you want.

Entirely up to you. If you want to provide instructions that would be awesome, if not I'll just stick the pictures up (with credit, of course).

That's pretty fly in a lurid food colouring kind of way

Thanks

Part of the reason it took thirteen hours is because by the time we'd finished with the cakes, my friend's whole kitchen looked like this:

Here are some fucked up looking rejects:

Look how busted they look! I like these more than the good looking ones :D

I'll upload some later.

Does anyone know any good novelty cake websites or books so I/we can learn how to do this properly? Because we had loads of fun and I'd be really psyched if I was the friend who makes amazing cakes.

You can buy black icing, or you certainly used to be able to. I got some in the Co-op a couple of years ago to decorate a cake. Super Cook Ready to Roll icing it was called.

Very  cakes Enid
