Bands Who Give Good Cover Version

The Manics did a covers album that neatly spanned the sublime (we are all bourgeois now- McCarthy) and the ridiculous (last christmas- Wham) via an awesome version of primal scream's 'velocity girl'.

The Slits, Jose Gonzales, White Stripes and another vote for Nouvelle Vague (in my band we actually do a cover of a Nouvelle Vague cover :D )

I like Sonic Youth's version of touch me I'm sick more than the original.

Killdozer mentioned already so Steel Pole Bathtub for their Cars and Cheap Trick covers. Extra points for commercial suicide, trying to release their version of The Cars first album as their major label debut. I hope that story is true anyway.

I would have said the fall, but that's been said already...

the flying burrito brothers, for their covering of James Carr's amazing "Dark End of the Street". Prefer the torchy original, but I do like their country cover. Oh and their version of Aretha's Do right woman (do right man) is also good. Oh, oh, and their slowed down cover of "honky tonk woman" is good too.

Oh and Soft Cell for their Northern Soul covers like What, and Tainted Love

*eta* and that slits cover mentioned above... and A certain ratio's version of Shack Up

Ones I like:

Yo La Tengo - I'm Your Puppet

John Yoko - Papa Was a Rodeo

Cat Power - Dreams

Bonnie Prince Billy - Going to Acapulco

Stuart Staples - Puff the Magic Dragon

The Birds - Femme Fatal/Here She Comes

The Fall - Victoria

Dead Kennedys - I Fought the Law

Deerhoof - The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill/Little Drummer Boy

Kode 9 - Sine of the Dub

:)

What about the Afghan Whigs? They've done loads of excellent cover versions. For example:
Lost in The Supermarket
Creep
If I Only Had a Heart
Can't get Enough of Your Love, Babe
Supersition
Moon River

....I could go on

actually yeh, they could win. especially in their later live sets when they'd go through about 4 covers and back to whatever they were playing in the first place.

Dulli's solo covers have been good too - his cover of Hyperballad is gorgeous

the cramps did some wicked, wicked covers, many of which i much prefer to the originals. "the way i walk", "i can't hardly stand it", "green fuzz", "love me", "fever"....

The sheer variety of their covers is what makes them stand out, and the fact Mr Dulli has a way of making a cover his own.

I love their version of True Love Travels on a Gravel Road.

I take it Jonny Cash has already been mentioned somewhere?

I love the Lemoenheads cover of Mrs Robinson. :o

There are loads although they are rare in comparison IYKWIM....?

That brings me nicely to Mudhoney - Hate The Police. Fucking quality track and I'm 99% sure it's a cover.

It is - The Dicks - texas band, Mudhoney's version is a lot better.

yep. Strong chance of win.

i've been listening to those two albums of Tom Waits covers a bit - most of them are kinda 'meh' either cut-price versions of the original or too much like the artist in question covering tom but not making it theirs - It's funny for Pete Shelley to do 'Better Off Without A Wife' but he just rama-lama's through it like a Buzzcocks tune and you'd be better off with one of his own Buzzcocks tunes or Tom's version - one that's unexpectedy impressed me is Drugstore's crack at 'Old Shoes'. they really do make it theirs, it sounds like a great Drugstore song. well done them.

Ooh no I prefer the Mudhoney one.

Yer man's voice got on my wick a bit, and they'd run out of tunes by the time I saw them play ('92).

I think you've missed the point a bit there Mudhoney ain't really about the tunes (although the best stuff is on the first couple records) and I've never known them be any less than great live - even touring Tomorrow Hit Today which was a low point

Placebo's cover of Running up that Hill was pretty good imo

Also Concrete Blondes cover of Tomorrow Wendy and Little Wing were both good

The Bangles cover of Hazy Shade of Winter KICKED ASS!!!!!!!!!!!
