Bands that you "irrationally" hate.

Nirvana. I bought "Nevermind" in my teens but never "got" it. "...Teen Spirit" had a catchy guitar hook but I couldn't see much else in the whole thing. I went back to it intermitently but was still never sold and ended up selling it. I guess what really grates is the adoration it and they seem to get, especially the notion of Cobain as a "tortured genius", and the posthumous deification he receives (this isn't exclusive to him by any means, Lennon, Shakur, Hendrix, etc get plenty too).

Hard to say...

I generally hate manufactured, bland or middle of the road stuff rather than many of those named about.
Oasis, U2, Coldplay and many others of this ilk bother me but it is more the pretentious wankers involved in the creation of the music than the music itself. I would not make any effort to listen to, let alone buy their work but find in generally inoffensive as a rule.

Perhaps these acts are more easily forgiven because I am forced to listen to Heart FM (playlist of Beyonce, Take That and whoever is hitting the press at the given time) in the office?

^^ This but different.

I am made to listen to all the recent pop and RnB crap that is in the charts all day at work so I feel I am owed really good shit when not in this hideous situation!

I must admit that I don't listen to Nirvana much now. But I'm eternally grateful for them for opening up the door to loads of other bands.

I honestly think that a lot of people who were my age at the time (I was 15 when Nevermind came out) would say the same.

This is not an irrational hate.

U2 and the RHCP.

I've walked past the crowds when they were playing gigs for the BBC at Television Centre and had to listen to the most fawning shite ever.

"Oh god!, they're the greatest ever" etc etc.

I'm with the Morrissey thing. A few good tracks, but a lot of dire stuff.

And someone said I look like him, and I got annoyed, and then they got annoyed about that.

Metallica. All of it. In fact most 'great' modern metal bands. It's just a load of shit really :(

yeah, most of these hatreds are just examples of being discerning and having good taste:

U2
the clash
red hot chili peppers
Oasis
Starsailor
Coldplay
Keane

they're all rubbish

I agree with the Sonic Youth thing too. They can't really write songs with tunes, but neither are they earsmashingly good noise like Merzbow or Derek Bailey or any number of audio shitstirrers. There was a time I'd successfully convinced myself that I really liked Sonic Youth, despite the fact that whenever I listened to their albums or saw them live I was totally underwhelmed.

Someone mentioned the Cramps. That I can understand too. The difference being that you had to see the Cramps LIVE (if seeing undead rock'n'roll zombie flesheaters LIVE isn't a contradiction in terms).

All their records, if you're honest, aren't that great: they're especially not that great compared to the hundreds of fiendishly cool 50s and 60s originals they covered (eg Strychnine, Sunglasses After Dark, Funnel of Love, Primitive et al). But live, the Cramps were a riot.

Spanish songs in andaluca
The shooting sites in the days of 39
Oh, please, leave the ventana open
Federico lorca is dead and gone
Bullet holes in the cemetery walls
The black cars of the guardia civil
Spanish bombs on the costa rica
Im flying in a dc 10 tonight

Chorus
Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
Yo te quiero, oh mi corazn
Spanish bombs, yo te quiero infinito
Yo te quiero, oh mi corazn

Spanish weeks in my disco casino
The freedom fighters died upon the hill
They sang the red flag
They wore the black one
But after they died it was mockingbird hill
Back home the buses went up in flashes
The irish tomb was drenched in blood
Spanish bombs shatter the hotels
My seoritas rose was nipped in the bud

Chorus

The hillsides ring with free the people
Or can I hear the echo from the days of 39?
With trenches full of poets
The ragged army, fixin bayonets to fight the other line
Spanish bombs rock the province
Im hearing music from another time
Spanish bombs on the costa brava
Im flying in on a dc 10 tonight
Spanish songs in andaluca, mandolina, oh mi corazn
Spanish songs in granada, oh mi corazn

Led Zeppelin and oh yes, Pink fucking Floyd. By all reasoning I should love both according to last.fm and all of my fellow guitar loving friends. I fucking hate them. Particularly Floyd.

i dunno, there's loads of shit bands and shit music going round, which everybody's agreed about, it's just not everybody's agreed about what's shit and what isn't, and that's about it really. :-|

I reckon 90% of punk is shit (but that's pretty rational in my book)

I suppose it isn't so much the music I dislike but people in the music press who declare certain bands "important" and "seminal" when they're just dull

Beck
Nickleback
Bruce Springsteen

i can justify my hatred for all of them, but i can't justify the extent of my hatred.

that's entirely rational - he's an utter cock and his guitar playing ain't all that either

he's a fucking amazing guitarist.

and he always comes across as sound in his interviews

he was an utter cock when he was an alkie/cokehead but all alkie cokeheads are utter cocks. specially millionaire ones

Most Jazz and funk. some people love it and dig it for hours, most of it just bores my tits off.

I remember when I saw Isaac Hayes and I was sat there like 'this guy has done some of the best songs ever, but this hour long funk jam is one of the lamest things ever'
