Bands That Logic Dictates You Should Like

Just get 50000 Fall Fans can't be wrong.

Has all of their tracks I will ever need - I too can't be bothered to delve into such a ridiculously large and varied back catalogue
Bloody hell, at least get The Permanent Years – Paranoia Man in Cheap Sh*t Room as well.

As to bands I should like: everyone tells me I'm being perverse not liking the Talking Heads (given that I like Television, Modern Lovers, etc), but I'm afraid I just don't. Never have, never will. I find them annoying art-school nonsense. Very annoying. Affected, forced, look-at-me-I'm-mad pish.

I'm inclined to agree - I like the odd Heads track but mostly i find it a bit contrived and Byrne really unengaging. Maybe that's the point, I dunno..

the rhythm section were great, and were even better as Tom Tom Club

I can take or leave a lot of talking heads' stuff, Remain in Light isn't nearly as good as several posters around here have led me to believe. I have, however, been listening to 'Fear of Music' a hell of a lot lately, that's a quality album. It's worth youtubing some of the songs from the film 'Stop Making Sense' as well, particularly the performance of 'Once in a Lifetime' which just has something utterly magical about it...

You know, like if you put your 10 favourite bands of a certain type on Amazon or Lastfm or something, and it'd be a safe bet you'd also like XXX

Mine:
1) Tindersticks.
Tick all the right boxes for me but fuck, i find them dreary and Staples voice laughable.

2) Bob Marley.
sorry, not disrespecting what he achieved, but I don't like his voice and I find most of the tunes really bland (70s onwards, at least).

3) T-Rex
Love Bowie, Slade, Roxy etc etc. But T-Rex are just a one-dimensional chugging horribleness. Twee and boring.

Yours?

Where does logic come into musical enjoyment?

Music is amongst other things, a welcome respite from the straightlaced world of logic.

Jesus, ok, logic isn't perhaps the right word. But most people got my point, rather than merely pointscoring.

get over yourself :)

I just didn't understand the question.

You and I have different approaches to music. I just like what I like, and don't ask a lot of questions about it. Music is one of the great pleasures in my life, and I don't want to spoil it with a lot of analysis of why I like what I like etc.

Yes you did, you're just being awkward.

Of course, Johnny. You really 'feel it', I'm just dry and academic about it :)

But if really feeling it means listening to the moronic MOR that seems to make up most of your taste, I'll settle for dry and academic any day, thanks :)

Yes! I LOVE Television, and like most stuff from that era, yet I can't stand Talking Heads. In fact, I heard that "And you may find yourself" one on the radio once and thought it was some wanky novelty record. When I realised it was the 'great' Talking Heads, I was gobsmacked.

Actually, I read the question wrong. I thought it said "Bands that logic dictates you shouldn't like.'

I thought that was sort of dumb.

The actual question isn't as bad, but the thing I said about logic, still applies to me.

I can't think of any bands that logically, I should like. If I don't like them, I don't like them.

There's no one on here more academic about music than you.:)

Not sure how you'd know the extent of my tastes, but this is typical of you, attempting to pull some sort of rank based upon your more cerebral and difficult-to-reach musical repertoire.:)

At the end of the day, music is about enjoyment. The person who is sent into rapture by the voice of Dolly Parton is, imo, miles ahead of someone who analyses music to death, taking all the fun out of it in the process.

Nick Cave. I should like him, and I do enjoy the mans lyrics on a page. Never heard owt from him that made me want to buy/torrent

Joanna Newsom. I'm a big fan of offbeat female singer songwriters like Bjork, Joan as Police Woman and Feist, but to me her voice is so unbearable mannered it sounds like a cat getting strangled.

The Handsome Family. I like alt country, but I find them unbearably twee and self consciously clever and they are unable to come up with a good tune.

The Tiger Lillies. Sure they are quirky and offbeat, but then the singer hacks away on a single note with his falsetto voice for about a minute and I want to tear my ears off.

Ah, Bjork. Liked the Sugarcubes (the first LP anyway), and should really like her techno/Black Dog inspired stuff, but just find her aimless caterwauling and OTT screeching really annoying. Also tend to find all the fanboy adoration of her somewhat bewildering.

Depeche Mode. Since I like a great deal of early-ish synth pop/electronic music, I should, I'm told, be in awe of them. However, I find Gahan an irritating turd and Gore's lyrics singularly embarrassing. Worth further derision for their U2-esque stadium grandstanding.

Nirvana. With all the other great bands around at the time, I found them very average. I suppose the lead singer was a touch more attractive than Tad's though.

Throwing Muses. Found Kristen Hersh unbearable. Had more time for Tanya Donnelly (though Belly were very ordinary, really).
