Bands that had to have a different name in America

think theres beena few nirvanas.

I think 'the prodigy' might have had to have added the "the" to thier name beacuse of the Mobb deep rapper.

But that one could just be made up. Were they just Prodigy in thier early days?

Not sure about this one. I reckon The Prodigy had released stuff a good couple of years before Mobb Deep did? :hmm:

Then again, how does it work, in terms of staking a legal claim on a name? Is it about who released a record first (ie: it's documented), or can somebody claim it by just proving that they were known as such-and-such a nickname for years before they even got onstage?

Handsome Dick Manitoba (of proto-punk band The Dictators) successfully forced electronica artist Manitoba to change his moniker to Caribou.

-Well, hearing them both, it's so easy to get them confused...:D

One thing I don't get is why, in terms of copyright, it's fine for totally unrelated films to have the same name (the two 'Crash' films, for instance) yet it's wrong for a band to have the same name as a record label! (Verve)

I think there is an american psychedelic rock band called 'The Verve' but I doubt americans would want to listen to the whiny wigan band anyway....

No, "the" Verve were originally just called Verve, but were compelled to add the definite article to avoid being confused with the label Verve Records, which gave the world the Velvet Underground among others.
