Back in the day: Who was your fave rave DJ?

Wintermute said:
Stu Allan, always reliable for a bit of bouncy bangingness. And he did Key 103 - "laaaaaarge" :D

Mr Allan is still cracking out the *uber* cheese at hardcore nights round and about (tho I suspect mainly north of the Watford Gap). I've got a copy of 'Hardcore Nation 3' (released a few weeks ago) which has a mix of his on which is, to be honest, a bit poo. However I've an MP3 of his Club Kinetic NYE 95-96 set, with MC Connie on the mic. It's a workout of some of the best 'ardcore/bouncy techno tunes ever (cold as ice, disssreaction, don't leave me alone etc). Unsurprisingly, it's quite good

Derrick May. I only saw him once and he was fucking great and had ALL the best tunes.

Sasha was great when he started but got a tad up himself, to put it mildly.

Also loved the two Colins on Kiss.

My favourite of all time though, is Top Buzz. Some really good memories of them from 90/91.

Colin Favour was good too... Big up all the Colins!

Anyone know what Colin Dale is up to these days? He's not on the radio anymore is he? Probably got culled when Kiss got bought by the Americans...

I remember first hearing Aphex Twins' Analogue Bubblebath on his radio show...

he's still djing around a bit I think, I saw him a couple of years ago and have a mate who's still in touch with him - think we're going to be getting him up to play for us soon too so I'll ask him;)

Well... yeah. But not "rave" in the sense of Easygroove or Slipmatt or dudes like that. I've never heard him play jungle or anything breakbeaty or bouncy. He plays hard techno. Which, yeah, you do get at raves. So, err... I rest my case ;)

I think I must be thinking ofa different clarkee - there was a clarkee, who if memory serves me right, used to work in blackmarket, alongside Nicky Blackmarket. that'll be it...

.

-Talking of Detroit, and rather than starting a whole thread, can anyone name check a Detroit house tune I heard at carnival, and at that dodgy Get Loaded in the Park thing. Tunes followed me around this weekend.

ITs a detroit stepper, and it has a vocal sample that goes, something like:

"Put your hands in the air - Put your hands in the air for Detroit city - ... I love this city"

Thats not quite right, but close. Bad tune though.
Ta.

So why is easygroove a cunt?

Maybe it was hereditary? Or his upbringing?
Edited.

these old DIY sets making the hairs on my arms stand up! been a long time...used to have lots of these type tapes probably all still in the loft..I was probably dancing to this live at the time as was at castlemorton and always went for the deeper DIY vibe over the spiral and liberator style hecticity.

Fave Rave DJ

I couldn't name just one.
The way the music and the scene evolved there was great DJ's for all occasions.

Kenny Ken - Alwasy played a flawless set

Ellis D - could twist your head

Mickey Finn - The original badboy

Randall - For them dark sessions

....and a guy I always feel sorry for, partly cause I knew him well, and mainly cause he never sold out to any promoter and didn't get the big time like the others ... DJ Pilgrim - Keeping it real!

not forgetting...
Grooverider
SS
Top Buzz
MC MC
MC Robbie Dee

Yeah he's still doing the cheezy bouncy hardcore, along with Slipmatt and Seduction and Brisk and Sy and Dougal and the fucking Vibes and fucking Livelee show. It was a shame. Bouncy hard rave could have been good, and they turned it into fucking fairground music for 14-year olds. I've got the tape pack of Kinetic NYE 95/96 and, while it was getting very cheezy even then, there's still tunes on there that kick arse. As soon as I source a tape deck, they'll be available for download.

Mmmm... not that Clarkee. I don't think, anyway. This Clarkee. Always could be relied on to play some seriously hard tunes, seamlessy mixed with a degree of technical perfection I've yet to see surpassed.

I liked Fabio & Grooverider as a double act at Rage in the early days.

But like others have said, far too many to mention.

just for you

Although I'm was never into their kind of playing style, Parks & Wilson gave me the best night ever at the Hippodrome in Middleton some time in the early '90s.

Some nice old mixes I've uploaded to rapidshare:

DIY Jack@Castlemorton 1992 Side a
DIY Jack@Castlemorton 1992 Side b

Let me know if any of these links die and I'll re-up the files.

Credit and thanks to zog for sharing these with me on soulseek!

More to follow...

Nice one, great to hear these again. Wonderful times, rhubarb-and-custards for goalposts etc.

DiY fucking ran it.

And I still think the track with the vocal "Bassline kicking, yes I'm grooving" sounds like "Baste my chicken".

growing up listening to....
