I remember going to see Gappa G at a club in Luton many moons ago

He was a shit hot dj , I heard he smoked to much skunk and went all religous ! shame because he made some crackers as well . this is the information center being one of them .

Hype rocks. I used to love his show on Phantasy FM

Fabio & Grooverider used to be cool too. As did Donovan Smith :)

ebay is your friend..... sort of
Sasha @ Universe
Jack @ Castlemorten
This trader is selling some classics s/he has put onto CD. But FUCK am I going to pay him/her £10 plus postage (of £2.50? for a CD inna plastic wallet?)
So, who wants to chip in?
Downer: It's gonna be a bad tape>CD transfer. The sound quality will suck cock.
Upper: You won't get it anywhere else. Come'on, I'll burnit 4 ye che

The best tapes of all, though, were the ones recorded at free parties up and down the land. Jack DiY at Castlemorton springs to mind on a more deep house tip...

I'm hosting about 20 old diy mix's from the early 90's including some from castlemorton. username: zog

they're in the folder: done/mixs/house/ diy and there's a few in the incoming folder n all

anyone from here just send us a message and I'll put you on the list

I guess my real favourites were my friends who used to put on illegal raves. My standout famous dj would Weatherall. Although I must admit I was never a DJ worshipper and have had the times I couldn't have told you who I was listening to as I was too mashed up. Nights at Universe (Club UK), the Chunnel Club & Clink St were always my favourites though.

There was a dude callled Mix Master Max (bit ofa crap name, granted) on Defection 89.4 - the station that split off from weekend Rush.

He was The Bollocks - really intricate sets, and his speciality was playing reggae tracks and then mixing hardcore tracks over the top.

Rarely played out, but I did see him at Future Myth at Roller Express once.

He also did hip hop style tricks like play the same tune on both decks, put one track half a beat out, and loop it up, or put it a splitsecond out to get a flange effect - or scratch tunes while they were playing - and pull it off.

I was always disappointed that he didnt keep playing... firing dj.

There was a Defection+Rush reunion party last month...anyone go?

Grooveriders 5am slots were always good - he made those 5am slots his own, back in the day.

He was part of the (excellent) "Psychotropic" group who released classics like "Hypnosis" & "Only for the head strong".
aye, seconded - only for the headstrong is a desert islanddisk for me - I used to have it on a "warehouse raves" cd, and used to leave it on repeat all day long! - the joy of being a teenager...

Totally original and unlike anything else that tune... Hypnosis was bad too, natch.

Stu Allan, always reliable for a bit of bouncy bangingness. And he did Key 103 - "laaaaaarge" :D

Special mention should go to Clarkee - he might not be a "rave" DJ but by fuck he's good.

Colin Favour was good too... Big up all the Colins!

Anyone know what Colin Dale is up to these days? He's not on the radio anymore is he? Probably got culled when Kiss got bought by the Americans...

I remember first hearing Aphex Twins' Analogue Bubblebath on his radio show...

Clarkee made some tunes with Dillinja before Dilinja got big (before the Metalheads releases, Angels fell and all that...). I thought Clarkee was a hardcore/rave dj, no?

Well... yeah. But not "rave" in the sense of Easygroove or Slipmatt or dudes like that. I've never heard him play jungle or anything breakbeaty or bouncy. He plays hard techno. Which, yeah, you do get at raves. So, err... I rest my case ;)
