mash on the side is middle class now?

This really is a race to the bottom here. Spuds go in Irish stew and hotpots and little more. Some things need to be richer and less starchy...
 
It's not that mash on the side is middle class, just that spuds in the stew is common.

My mum always put spuds in stew, so I have always put spuds in stew. That's what we DO. Spuds AND dumplings.

I made a Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall venison casserole recipe a while back, and it felt really weird having mash on the side. Very nice though have to say.
 
I season the meat with lime and black pepper and leave it in a bag in the fridge for a while, before cooking.

I also use pearl barley for yummy thickness
