Avoid United Arab Emirates if you've ever touched anything, ever...

Er....Four years, though? For a spliff?

You dick.

Again for the terminally dumb:

Whether or not I agree with the law/sentence is irrelevant, my point was that when traveling internationally, it is a personal responsibility to ensure you are well informed as to the local law with regards to these kind of things and act accordingly.

It hardly takes a great effort to discover that you are likely to lose 4 years of your life in a shitty prison for a minor drugs transgression in the UAE and if people show flagrant disregard for these laws, my sympathy is limited*

When Mrs Swarf and I moved out here, we took painstaking care to rid ourselves of all potentially drug-tainted possessions and paraphernalia, because I had done my research.

*shrugs*

For the record (and again for the hard of understanding, i.e. you) I think the law of the land here is pretty obscene in a number of areas and not just with regards to drugs, but that was never my point.

* Obviously (and I am taking great pains to spell this out to you as it seems it is necessary) my view on the cases of those folk who have ended up imprisoned in the UAE for a stray poppy seed or possession of prescribed and essential medicine, is a little different.

The guy with the 0.0003g of ganja on his shoe lives near me,

I want to know just how the fuck they detected it.

i recently got an israel stamp in the passport, so this Dubai bollocks give me no choice to keep me distance form Ayrab countries for a while

A simple swab and basic chemical test would be enough to detect its presence. Although how you visually notice such a small amount on someone's shoe is curious. Unless he was unfortunate enough to have treaded on a spliff butt...

I think the significance of this is overstated TBH - in Dubai at any rate.

I have two friends here who have traveled in and out of the country several times with Israeli stamps in their passport.

That only really applies to Saudi Arabia & Iran. Dubai lets you in if you have money.

Do feel sorry for Grooverider, but he is a cock for taking drugs there.

If he feels 4 years is harsh, he should be grateful he didn't venture in to Kuwait with drugs like this chap did

Oh Come on mate. A little warning about that fucking link?

Tell people first? Label the bloody link.

So can you buy gear in teh Dubai then ? Pretty iffy occupation...

I have not seen it here, but I have smelt it on more than a few occasions.

I would imagine the locals - true Emiratees - would indulge and indeed get away with it too as seems to be the case with a lot of things here.

I have also heard that the usual class As are available if you know where to look and a good place to start are the Emirates Airlines staff residences....

:)

Fair enough though innit?

You don't have to agree with a countries drug laws to acquaint yourself with them afore you arrive and to abide by them.

The twat clearly and deliberately brought a spliff in and expected to ride through it on his "fame"

Given that a few other famous types have pulled the same thing here of late and got away with it, they are obviously going to make an example of him.

*shrugs*

Grooveriders black though isn't he?

*waves at Froggy!*
What did you do for Purim, Missy?

Proably not the thread for waving, but I dont see The 'Rider getting out this side of the London Olympics. :)

I celebrated it early (last week) because my housemates went home for the holidays and i would have had nobody to celebrate it with otherwise, I dont know the Jewish society peeps very well. I tried to make Hamantashen but they came out disasterously as a sort of sludge with pastry and jam :(

((me))

how did you celebrate it? :D

Last time I looked yeah.

The last one of these "Dubai Sleb Drug Shocka!" cases to hit the headlines was that of some no-mark American music producer friend of Noamio Campbell, visiting here for her birthday.

He got clobbered with half a wrap of coke in his pocket, got banged up pleading the "Oh noes I forgotted it was there!" defense and "languished" for all of 8 or 9 days before Sheik Mo' gave him a full pardon and sent him on his way.

He - for all it matters - was also black...

Anyways, good to see that if we are to be subject to ridiculous and draconian drug laws, they are starting to apply them more consistantly and severely to those whom would likely would have wiggled out of it before.

When one considers all the hundreds of anonymous, faceless and uncelebrated Indians, Pakistanis, Filipinos, Egyptions, Moroccans, etc, etc, etc getting right royally F'd in the A for laughable drug "offences" - real or imagined - I don't have much sympathy for Mr Rider.

Fuck him, to be honest.

Congratulations mate, you were very thorough. However some people travel an awful lot and perhaps can't afford to be quite that meticulous every time they travel.

I'm saying he is blame-free, but four years!!

Come on, have a heart, thats a pretty shit situation.

Well like I said mate - I certainly do not agree with or support the drug laws here nor the harsh associated sentencing and I never will. That was never the point I was making...

This still stands though...
