rubbershoes

not the only raver in the village
bugger

it's served me well for many a year

so what do people recommend as a decent replacement?

I got that screen earlier too. It gives the impression that you will have to pay, but it will still be free according to this

Is there some connection between Avast! from Alwil Software and AVG from Grisoft that I am unaware of?

Oh I see, RaverDrew is suggesting Avast as a replacement fot AVG although AVG will still be free even in version 7.5.

Phew! Ta for that, momentary panic over.

GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and user interface is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.

it is just the release, not the whole free product that is being discontinued! Big difference!

It looks like they're trying harder to compete somewhat with the bigger names - a lot of which offer packages with firewalls and spyware checkers and allsorts built in. They'll offer all that too, but you'll have to pay for it.

The AV itself looks like it'll remain free.

AVG is the bees man, I've had absolutely no problems (we even use it here at work to plug the gap in the sieve-like NHS system)

Perhaps this thread title should be changed to "avg free antivirus not being discontinued"?

Yeah I had a little panic when I saw that pop up last night and another one just now.
