i drove an auto on holiday once and never will again if i can help it. i couldn't overtake anything as the autogearbox took an age to change and by the time it was ready to give me any power, my chance to overtake had gone .

That's 'cos you were driving a crap underpowered car, not because the transmission was automatic. My kickdown charges me past anything I need to and in "Sports" mode it'll practically wind you!

I learnt in an automatic and passed my test in an auto and then had to go through my manual test as the only adapted vehicle we could afford was a manual!

Passed both tests first time though!

My own car is an auto and I do prefer driving it - not very confident on hills in the manual so tend to take the long way round if a certain hill is involved :D That may be because the handbrake didn't work properly when we bought the car and I had a nasty experience when I rolled back

:) so someone who cant master clutch control, can drive a ton of metal at 70mph and be just as safe,, thats sorted then ;)
What I was getting at was more that if you can't master the simple matter of a clutch and gearbox I'd have doubts as to how well you could manage basic things like, well, everything else that driving a car involves - I can't see how the clutch is any more difficult than all the other hand/eye co-ordination you have to do whilst driving.

my first two cars were minis - and now I drive this stupid automatic corsa. With a mini, driving is an active thing - you feel through your body every strain on the engine etc, and I loved that. Throwing that little car around london was fun.

so when I got the corsa, i just felt like driving had become passive. Which I hate because previously, the actual process of driving was a pleasure. I know that partly it's because this car has proper suspension, power steering, abs etc - but the automatic thing is the most noticeable thing. I feel like a passenger.

At the risk of having people confuse me and spanglechick again  :D , I'd agree entirely. I like to be able to decide when I change gear, not when the car decides it's appropriate.

Automatics aren't as fun to drive IMO.

Never driven an automatic, but I don't think I'd like it much - changing gear is one of the fun things about driving.

How does it work if you want to shift down a gear to get good revs to overtake? Can you override the automatic gearbox?

You decide with an auto. Changing gear is effected by how much pressure you put on the accel pedal. If you wanna change up quicker than the box wants, you take your foot off. If you wanna change down you put your foot down. Some older cars had a separate 'kickdown' pedal to do this as well.

I'll admit a lot of auto boxes don't respond well if they're old or just crap ones. And it can take time to get used to changing gear in an auto.

Fun's a pretty personal emotion. Sometimes it's fun sitting back with an arm draped across the seats and tooling around with a big motor and an auto box. And yeah, small cars with manual boxes can be fun too. For my everyday driving tho I prefer not to be fiddling around with more pedals and levers than I really need to.

Depends. For a big engined cruiser with lots of torque, a manual gearbox is academic. Start in first, second, third, the engine doesn't give a shit.If your car has any pretensions of being a sports car then a manual is the natural choice, of course.

Auto boxes can die and empty your wallet. Just to diagnose problems can cost as much as a replacement box. But fuck it, summertime, all the windows down, one hand on the wheel and the other leaning out the window. Yeah. Nice in London traffic, too.

I suppose this thread is as good as any to admit I have no idea what the '2' and the other thing that I can't remember (is it an L?) is for on my auto car :o I use D, R and P and sometimes remember to use the overdrive thingy when I'm on the motorway or highway. Never use neutral!

I was obviously not paying attention during my lessons!

Anyone want to enlighten me? :)

The 2 forces the box to only use the first two gears IIRC.

You may often want to keep it in a low gear - climbing a very steep hill for example.

Or going down one whilst towing something to use the engine to slow the car.

As the only thing i drive is Landrover no power steering gear stick at arms length and not the easiest thing to change .Auto sounds good .Though would always worry if i brought an automatic would nevet be able to drive a
manual again :( .

Never driven an automatic car. Driven some automatic scooters and is not as much fun.

The C90 with its centrifugal clutch (=manual gearchange but automatic clutch) was fun. Don't rev the tits off it in neutral when the lights go green thinking you're in gear, THEN put it into gear. I am still amazed that the biggest wheelie I ever pulled was on a C90.

I almost needed a change of clothes too after that one :D

I would never go back to a manual gearbox car.
That's because you dont like cars.

Auto's are for commuters Manuals are for drivers. Love the way that the engine communicates through the gear box....I'm buying a 250 break horse power motherfucker soon....can't wait!!

Manual all the way. Automatic cars bore me, and I prefer to control what the engine and transmission are doing myself, thankyou. Besides, you can't use engine braking with an automatic.

I've driven a few automatics, but the one I did most miles in was a rattly old Volvo 340 auto with a CVT 'box made of glorified rubber bands. I was actually impressed with how well the 340 handled, given the horror stories about them, and it was comfortable, but I didn't like the gearbox at all. Then the belts started to slip, and you had to scream the engine to get the bloody thing going at all.

What tosh. Why is manipulating a gear stick and using a clutch driving properly? If you're so keen to do everything manually perhaps you should start the car with a hand crank, double declutch between gears and alter the ignition timing with manual advance and retard. People who drove vehicles with those features like that would consider your modern synchromesh-gearboxed car in much the same way you view auto boxes. (Or perhaps they woudn't be so stupid as to dismiss technological advances)
hear hear,a load of bullshit.I have been driving for a living all my life and the auto boxes of today cant be beaten.Admittedly 20 years ago they were a bit dodgy but now they are the ducks nuts.I own a v6 vienta[for mrs pat] and a longreach ute which are both autos which have been no trouble at all.Just hold em flat and they put ya back in ya seat no worries.Went on holidays a few times in the wifes car, kids and luggage etc,sat on 160-180 kph all day with no problems at all. This car has now done 84,000 kays in 4 years and has never had a spanner on it.The ute has done 180,000 kays with same result but it dont do 180 kays though

automatic or manual

I've driven manual cars for over 50 years, now i've got an automatic 1.4 Clio
and it's a pleasure to drive even in heavy traffic. What's the attraction of dozens of gear changes in a few miles of town driving?
