Automated announcements on Tube trains

As if they weren't bad enough, you also have the "Mind the Gap". Please remember that there is no smoking on the London Underground". "Please remember to take your luggage with you", whatever station "has steps free access". "Apologies for the delays". "Please let passengers off the train first"

Half the time you miss the important announcements about why you're delayed because all the other announcements are drowning them out
Be glad you're not in Wales.

Because you get the whole thing - train announcements, not leaving your luggage unattended, NEW! it's illegal to smoke on the platforms, "professional thieves operate on this station, make sure you have a ticket, etc...in both English AND Welsh.

At least, by virtue of constant repetition, I know how to say "Os gwelwch yn dda" now... :)

....It’s much nicer to have an announcement from the driver than a disembodied computerised voice.

Oh I dunno...I find it increases my sense of isolation and urban alienation rather nicely...

You might feel different if you were a driver and had to say the same thing every few minutes all day every day.

I'm finding the announcer on the Piccadily line far to noisy for my liking these days.

Frankly, its just another form of dumbing down.

Manchester's trains are far too ancient for any of this technical wizardry -- we just get a gruff voice from the driver's cab muttering "Levenshulme" just before the station and a bit of bleeping as the doors close.

But I was over in Liverpool last week and their Merseyrail has the full works -- Miss Computer won't shut up, in between telling you that you need to change at Moor Street for the whatever line and alight here for the Albert Dock, she's ordering you to watch your bags (in Liverpool!) and not to put your feet on the seats etc. The thing literally doesn't shut up for the whole trip
