Australia v Croatia

Which they've done.

Fair play, no one gave them a chance and they're in, with an attitude and work rate that's really put some of the "better" sides to shame.

:)

That was fucking ridiculous and is completely indicative of why the english game is such a pile of worthless wank, poll turned the last 5 minutes into a big fuck off spectacle, which is exactly what the premiership is, a big fucking spectacle, the sport comes second.

In other news;

HARRY, HARRY KEWELL, HARRY, HARRY KEWELL.

Whoever it was slating him for missing the 'sitter' against brazil, HAVE IT.

Well done Oz.
Bit of a shambles though with the card thing. Good to see that mistake by the Ozzy keeper wasn't finally punished.

Only sending off on THREE yellow cards I've ever seen!!!

(and I beat one of the summarisers in saying that ... )

Absolutely classic moment.

Up there with that ref that disallowed that goal for France when the Saudi's walked off coz they heard a whistle.

Classic exciting match, despite the comedy of (mainly ref-provided) errors, and I only switched over just after Croatia's second goal.

Aus deserved it, they worked hard, kept attacking, defended in numbers (if too deep) covered (most) of their goalkeeper's errors ... great substitutions, added attackers when they were behind ...

That moment where the Croatian GK hung on to that ball despite THREE bodies on top of him, and kept on the non-scoring side of the line ...

Croatia tried to attack too, but weren't as good and were quite dirty ....

Come on, that's bit sweeping, Poll is notorious as a shite referee in the Premship. (and in denying Oxford a penalty back at the Manor against Chelsea in the FA Cup, a few years back!! -- that was him I'm almost sure ... ).

But the refs. are not ALL like that, nowhere near as bad as that. And I'm no fan of the Premship particularly.

I think Poll should be sent home now, then next season relegated ..... by two or three divisions. Then he can beat the farce of a referee we laughed at, at Southend v Oxford a few seasons ago -- sent off one Southend player (white) when the actual offender was black ... :D

Plenty of excitement in the English game if you look for it ... :p ... not sure if it's the right kind mind ...

Snowypat will be back to mock those that mocked him and his team........

He will be unbearable..............................i hope:D

Great game, and i am, needless to say, extremely happy. Bring on the Italians. :)

But Kewell was offside before he put the ball in the net.

I thought Australia were the better side for most of the match, but something tells me that Kalac won't be in goal for the Aussies in next game.

Just seen that replayed, yes it was clearer that he was off.

But at some other point, Aus were denied a clear penalty for HANDBALL by a Croatian in the box, obvious rubbishness of Poll again ...

So justice done in the end ... and Australia played better overall.

That looked like the match to watch!

I'm getting drawn into this world cup thing and I'm looking forward to watching Australia x Italy

Heeeelllllllllp!

The disallowed goal right at the end, what happened? Why was it disallowed, they didn't replay it.

that was mental at the end, didn't hear the final whistle with all that sending off shenanigans

in fact the guy who got the 3 yellows was just lying on the pitch, couldn't be arsed walking off

Yep, i think the right team went though, and that justice was served. That definitely looked like a handball to me in the second half.

Still, it would be nice if we could have a discussion about a World Cup match where the referee wasn't the main topic of conversation. Some of the officiating has been truly abysmal.

I agree, but this match had far and away the worst officiating, and most ref errors, in a country mile, so far ...

There are some good ref's, of course, Clattenberg is one that springs to mind, its difficult to remember the names of the others, as the old adage goes, you dont notice the good ones (it is of course, difficult to let a lot of games flow due to the nature of certain teams; bolton, et al,) but ask yourself this;

Why is poll even at the world cup when we all know he's arse ?

Why was riley sent to the CL and international tournaments when he was 'fucking up' week after week ?

Theres a whole industry based around 'talking points' and the FA are more than happy to oblige it.

Dont think the ref's have been that bad, the linesmen however.....

Whatever happened to daylight between attacker and defender, or benefit in favour of the attacking side ?

Drama everywhere in this game. May be my bias as an Aussie who crawled out of bed at 4 am to watch this, but it was one of the most exciting games of the tourney for mine.

Three handballs by Croatia went unpunished.

Three yellow cards to a Croat with finally a sendoff.

Late substituted Aussie goalie who shouldn't even be playing sandlot ball.

Disallowed goal to Australia in extra time.

What a bloody awful ref.

Bring on the Italians! ;)

Depends on the game. I certainly agree that some games have ended without any significant officiating problems; as you said earlier, we only really notice the referees and linesmen when they fuck up.

I watched the US-Ghana match this morning, and thought that the penalty which led to Ghana's second goal was an awful decision too. Luckily, like in the Australia-Croatia game, the better team ended up advancing.

I agree with you about the offside thing. There have been some very close decisions that probably should have gone to the attacking team.

Shame about the ref as I think Australia were excellent this evening. In fact I think the've been underrated in this tournement. Technically they are good, they rarely seem to resort to just hoisting it up to Viduka and have passed it (and moved) really well - England take note. On top of that they have the typical "never say die attitude". Coming back from being 1-0 and 2-1 down was no mean feat against a good Croatia team.

They will miss Emerton in the next round and Italy might be a step too far but for me they've been one of the pleasant surprises. I bet you could have got short odds on them finishing bottom of their group before the competition started.
