Aussie burgers: McDonalds lifting prices in working-class areas

They still do that don't they?

Uh-huh, but not to the excessive extent that they did back then, so they're given a free pass by the OFT. They explain the differential as a function of the logistics of supplying smaller "out of the way" stores being more expensive, which is arrant bollocks unless you're delivering down several miles of winding country lane.

Actually rather noble, might encourage the lower income people to not eat quite so much crap, or at least diversify the crap they eat more.

If they lowered their prices in poorer areas you'd say they were evily targeting the poor with their rubbish food.

If they thought sales were going to tail off they'd reduce the prices like a shot!

Let's face it, that's not the reason for doing this.

Ya I know, that point was tongue-in-cheek but as has already been pointed out, it is good capitalism. This is a capitalist society.

There's a lot of businesses that do this. Gasoline and groceries are almost always higher in poorer areas than rich ones. Why is this suprising?

Grocery stores in poor areas often have little to no produce in the store. They stock stuff that doesn't spoil. They can get away with it because the poor often don't have the transportation to go buy their groceries somewhere else.

over here in the US everything is more expensive in the posh areas

I'm in the US. The greater expense you see is likely due to the huge increase in quality. The poor can't afford organic and wouldn't even think of it. When you compare Twinkie to Twinkie, and boxed macaroni to boxed marcaroni, its cheaper in the posh neighborhoods.

its more due to the location's higher rent/lease costs. its much more expensive to operate any store in a posh area than a cheaper area.

:rolleyes::D

Sorry I don't agree. While there are higher expenses in some posh neighborhoods, poorer neighborhood grocery stores often buy and stock less food so they don't get the volume discount that the bigger chain stores do. I can always get food cheaper in my city than I can in say White Clay (located in the poorest county in the US). Not only are the groceries higher, but they charge a premium for cashing government checks.

I think what you may be comparing is Posh grocery stores to merely lower middle class ones. In that case, they are cheaper in the "poorer" neighborhood.

no, i'm talking about a regular large-chain grocery store (Kroger, Publix, Jewel, Ralphs, etc...) in a posh area vs. a regular large-chain grocery store in a poor area. the prices for the same item(s) will generally be higher in teh former

The large chains stores don't put stores in really poor areas. They put them in "poorer" neighborhoods and then they are usually cheaper, but they avoid the truely poor areas like the plague.

Wow - I'm glad I live on this side of the border.

Don't your major chains send out flyers/ads with their prices on them? Here they do - and it's the same price in all outlets of that chain.

I do remember reading a grocery price analysis shortly after we found out that our groceries had gone up 9% (cost of living dropped - go figure). They priced by city. I would have figured that the cost of transportation would have caused the price difference, but it didn't seem to. Places further north were cheaper than other areas.

That's true

Iraq War to control Oil supply - also its just business
The slave triangle - also just business

And then we can blame the victims

Not the same. Iraq was a mix of Bush being a bastard and a bunch of US companies seeing $$$$$$.
The triangle trade was mostly British merchants making a good few quid out of human misery.
These would be far closer to the modern drugs trade than McShits flogging overpriced lumps of heart attack to foolish people who have little cash but still waste it on rubbish.
These are customers not victims. OK, maybe they are victims but only of their own stupidity.

I was brought up with the idea that if you wanted cheap prime cuts you went to the poor area butchers, if you wanted cheap sustenance meat (offal) you went to the rich area butchers. Has anything changed?
