heheh

do you mean don't buy the english vertion? (japan is region 2 aswell)

It is? I thought Japan was something crazy like region 4 or something. So Japanese DVDs will work on my UK player?? Never even bothered trying since i thought they wouldn't! :o

EDIT: Doh! It's China that's region 6. Right, time to order those rare uncut japanese DVDs i've been pining for! :D

i think australia is 4 ... but i'm fairly certain japan is 2 i contemplated buyin somew godzilla dvds

Yeah, until i noticed that Ryuhei Kitamura directed a godzilla film (Final Wars) last year i thought they stopped making them yeeeaaars ago, turns out there are something like 4 whole series' of Godzilla films! Used to love taping them on late night Channel 4 on friday nights when i was a nipper

EDIT: Recommendations for online places to buy actual Japanese DVDs?

DVDs are SO expensive on that site! £25+ for some of them!

Anyway, thinking about it, the DVD player is still going to have to be NTSC isn't it? So they won't play (or play properly at least) on a PAL player will they?

Any UK based sites that sell Japanese DVDs?

Audition is seriously good horror. there's something really special about Asian cinema in general - be it horror, epics, cop films, epics etc.

Pisses all over Hollywood fare; IMHO.

Oh yeah, if anyone liked Azumi, it's worth checking out Versus by the same director (although i'd either 'acquire' a copy of Ultimate Versus (the director's cut) off the net or buy the DVD from Japan since there's loooaaads missing from the UK version, as is there from Azumi). It's a good ol' gore/comedy/zombies/sword fighting mash-up  Just don't watch the crappy UK version.

I have both, think they're both Region 2 (which is what they Japanese use). Have you seen Azumi 2 yet?

Don't understand all this NTSC/PAL business but my DVD player plays both. Check whether your DVD player can take NTSC or buy a new one!

You've got both Ultimate Versus and the Japanese special edition of Azumi?? Where did you pick up copies from?? Have got alright-ish copies on my computer, and don't want to buy the UK versions since so much is missing from them. Likewise i've been trying to get my hands on a Jap uncut version of Sky High. Haven't seen Azumi 2 yet, have been meaning to find out if there is a cut and an uncut version; i hate watching the cut version of a film when i see it for the first time (and considering practically everything by Ryuhei Kitamura that is released over here in the UK is a cut version it means i either have to find an uncut version to download  :( )Will investigate about my DVD player playing NTSC, but at the minute its not a priority unless i can find somewhere to buy actual Japanese DVDs for a reasonable price (am not gonna pay £27 for Ultimate Versus from that site Shippy recommended!!) :(

No, I have Region 2 Versus and Region 2 Azumi! What's missing from them then? Probably from Play.com

Edited to add that I got Azumi (this version) from Amazon

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002HSDS2/026-5714306-2166865?%5Fencoding=UTF8

Well I dunno the exact differences, but Ultimate Versus has about 10 minutes worth of extra scenes (mostly longer action scenes, the final sword fight is MUCH longer than the cut version, extra CGI has been added and the existing CGI and footage have been cleaned up a bit, there's also a second disc with something like an hour and a halfs worth of extras, although i don't think these are subtitled but might be wrong) and is only available in Japan, there is no word yet of it ever being released anywhere else. Likewise with Azumi the Japanese director's cut has about 15 mins worth of extra scenes, although i think the majority of this is actually dialogue and story related, which is why bits of the story are a bit mangled in the UK version. Likewise the extras aren't subtitled but i think there are more of them too. Sky High also suffers from similar cuts, i just can't get my head around why the versions of alot of Ryuhei Kitamura's that are released outside of Japan have so much action AND story cut from them

Ah well, I dunno.

Turns out I got Versus from Play.com and it's Region 0 and has the following features:

Special features
Star and director filmographies
Scene selection
Mark Wyatt film notes
Original theatrical trailer
Asia Extreme trailer reel
Interactive menus
'Behind Versus: The Birth of A Dark Hero' (27 mins)
Region 0
'The Side Story of Versus: Nervous' (7 mins)

...and if you'd actually read the entry for Audition then you'd know that the R2 version isn't cut as you claimed before. The only cut version is the R-rated R1 US version.
